Paigesion's Journal, 28 June 2017

Something occurred to me today. Dieting isn't about struggle and hardship of giving up all the things you love. Its about learning MODERATION. You really want that sandwich? Well, make it and cut into 4 pieces, supplement with other healthy food items, eat those first so your mostly full and finish it off with a quarter of that sandwich.
You get what you want and end up full without overdoing it. Love learning ways to make myself happy while staying within nutrition requirements and calorie limits.

I do the exact same thing. Especially with the brownies that my husband constantly wants. I cut a very small piece and put it aside until I eat everything I can for the day and save that for the last food item I put in my mouth.

Its a great strategy, no doubt!

I agree... but over time I've learned that, from a long-term weight loss perspective, we are truly better off when we learn to crave healthier foods instead of that brownie. It is not easy, but after eating low glycemic for almost 7 years, without even being conscious of it, my tastes have evolved. I crave berries, melon and oranges when I want something sweet -- at least most of the time. It's proven really helpful of course that many of the things I used to crave now make me terribly sick as in can't leave the house sick, and if I want ice cream, I have to make it myself. But most of the time, when I have a fit and want coffee ice cream, I have convinced myself to have coffee yogurt with some chocolate chips. It's not easy, but it's do-able.

Congrats on your epiphany! There's often a BIG difference between what we put on our plates and in our mouths and suggested "serving" size. i.e. a pint of Haggen Daz ice cream is 4 servings. Yeah right.

Look, while I appreciate the opinions of those that disagree with me, this is a site built on support. You're entitled to your opinion 100%, and you may well be right (though I think honestly you should live just a teeeeensy bit, but to each their own!). But I know from dieting previously that there is absolutely no reason to tell yourself "I cannot have anything I want ever." If I occasionally, note I said occasionally, want a 1/4 of a sandwich, that is not going to kill my diet. I use the healthiest bread available and healthy toppings. If somebody else wants to do the same with a tiny bite of brownie thats their own prerogative. But I will not be told that having a bite of the semi-healthy food item that maybe I SHOULD avoid (in miniscule quantities), is just as bad as having a whole bowl of ice cream, or something along those lines. If you disagree with my posts thats fine, but the negativity is unnecessary, as this IS a place of support. Let's treat it as such. Thanks!

Also I do agree Hermione's mom, and wasn't referring to you (I deleted their post)! I dont let myself "splurge", which I use the word lightly, on sweets. I "splurge" on semi healthy items. My occasional treat to myself is sushi, or something similar. High carbs, yes, but sushi is life 😂😂

Paigesion-- I go with sashimi to avoid the carby rice. One of the Japanese restaurants I go to has a "tuna salad" -- tuna sashimi on greens with avocado. It's really yummy. Also, many places here in Chicago sell low-carb sushi rolls that replace the rice with chopped lettuce, cucumber, et. So I indulge all the time -- in fact, I had sushi for lunch yesterday.

I'll have to try the lettuce version! Had the cucumber one before, and wasn't a fan, though I'm sure with time on this diet I'll adjust.

Paigesion-- sometimes the cucumber in storebought maki is a little slimy. I don't think cucumber keeps well when it's cut into those little matchstick pieces and then sits around in a cooler for a few hours. Better to have this somewhere where you know they just made it. The little carrot matchsticks are much better.

I actually got it at a sushi restaurant near me, it was fresh, just kind of bland. (I totally agree about store bought, though.) It might have been the roll I chose, next time I'll try a normal roll (California roll or something) made with the cucumber instead of rice and see if that helps! My biggest worry is annoying the poor chefs in charge of making it 😅

Oh Paigesion -- if I worried a lot about annoying chefs, I'd never get anything to eat! I have pretty significant dietary restrictions, and I have to practically interview the chef before I order anything. For the most part, I find people are very kind and cooperative. In 2015, I went on one of those Viking River Cruises in France, and the chef met with me every morning to discuss lunch and dinner, and he made me beautiful food, and I had not one allergic reaction of digestive upset during the whole trip. It was amazing.

One day I'll learn to be bothered less by it, no doubt! 😂
