alllicat's Journal, 11 January 2010

Down again. I didn't eat too terribly this weekend, and I found the noodles!! But, after driving 30 minutes to the nearest Trader Joe's, only to find out that they didn't carry them anymore. So, driving around my town, I wandered into an Asian food store, and right in front of me, 5 minutes from my apartment, there were all the Shirataki noodles that I could ever want! So I bought some. Then I went back the next day and bought some more. I made a wonderful fettuchini alfredo with them. And it was only like 100 calories! I love finding new ways to eat the things I love.

A friend of mine who the past couple of years has lost about 60 pounds told me a great way to put into perspective weight loss. 4 sticks of butter is a pound, right? So, for every pound you've lost, you're lost 4 sticks of butter. So, I've lost 72 sticks of butter. That's a heck of a lot of butter. And altogether I would like to lose 312 sticks of butter. I don't even think that would fit into my apartment.

I was talking about how no matter what, I will always feel like a "fat" person. The same friend told me that he wants to lose the 20 lbs that he gained back since stopping, or laxing on his diet regiment. I won't say how much he weighed at his lowest, but it was less than I weigh now. I told him that he was too skinny (this isn't a random person, this is someone who I've known for almost 15 years and in ways is like an older brother to me, so I can be honest with him and not hurt his feelings.) He said that he looks in the mirror and still sees the fat person that he was. I told him, and most others, including his wife, that we have no recollection of him being overweight. And he said, that's because other people see it, but not you. You see what you still need to work on and what you still need to get rid of, while others see what you've lost. Well, there are some mean spirited people who will tell you that you've haven't done enough, but they are few and far between. I just bite my thumb at them.

So from reading other people's journals, and the comments on their journals, I must know, MomofTwoGirls, what Cheesecake Factory did you go to? I worked at the one in Menlo Park Mall for 6 years. I am totally curious at what you had to eat.

Also, madaboutmoose, way to go on your deals at Macys. I managed to get a new winter coat that was originally $205, for $87 yesterday, it does feel wonderful to get a bargain. Also, my coat was a size smaller than the one I bought last year. :)

My 5:
5. Being 2 pounds away from 20 lbs!
4. The dream I had about Disney World
3. Pitchers and catchers report in less than a month!
2. Cowboys winning this weekend.
1. Good friends (including 'fs' friends) and a wonderful boyfriend who support me through this journey.

Lol re the butter sticks. Mmm. Butter. What are these noodles you hunted down? Are they some kind of bean curd or soy-based noodles by any chance? I was just reading about those last night in an old low carb cookbook I used. I don't follow low carb, per se, but there are some good ideas I'd forgotten about. That is pretty sad about the guy who still sees the fat person 15 years later--but I can definitely understand it. It's sort of like when I was 19 and I thought I looked terrible in a bathing suit because I didn't have a 100% perfect model body. Ridiculous. We really need to work hard on our mind to make it catch up with all the work we've done. Congrats on the loss!

You are doing amazing! Really inspiring. Hmm. Shirataki noodles... I've seen those. I read about them the other day too. So they're good? I might have to buy some. I love almost all Asian food.

Oh he didn't lose the weight 15 years ago. I've known him for that long. He lost the weight maybe a 2 years ago. Well that was when he started losing at least. And the noodles are called Shirataki Noodle and the brand is House Foods, I think. They are in my food journal from Friday. They are tofu infused yam flour. (Just sounds delicious, doesn't it? lol) But they are about 20 calories per serving. And each bag is 2 servings. I just eat the whole bag.

Ohh. I'm sorry. I misread. Still working on my morning coffee! The noodles sound intriguing. Do you eat them hot? The ones I was reading about supposedly get nasty and sticky when hot so the person recommended eating them only in cold noodle salads.

Starla, you have to watch out with them. Consistency wise, they are...slippery. Just very chewy. I know a lot people who have a problem with consistencies. I loved them though and anything that tricks me into thinking that I'm eating pasta, is even better

Wonderful progress ... thoughtful processing ... continue on!!

@ beets: you microwave them for a minute or parboil them for 3 -4 minutes. they are super simple to work with.

Hmm. I'll have to check it out. Though I have not had much luck with alternative pastas!

I have been wanting ramen noodles lately, I bet they would work well w/ a little soy sauce and seasoning... Hmm...

Work well as a good substitute, I meant.

I went to the Cheesecake Factory in the Freehold Mall - they put one in a year or two ago, but before that, the one in Menlo was the only one around. I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was better when Evan had it the last time! My favorite thing to get is... I can't remember what its called, but it had Shitaki mushrooms, and asparagus, and asian beef in it. Mmmmm.

Oh, I opened the Freehold one as a trainer. I drove down there everyday at the crack of dawn. Freehold isn't too far from me, so it was too bad, maybe 35 minutes. But the 16 hour days were killer. Great diet though. I ate the Vietnamese Shrimp Summer rolls everyday. And that was it. Yum! I miss those.

You may have had the Crispy Spicy Beef. Unless they put something new on the menu already. I haven't even been gone 4 months yet. lol

Alli, do you read Hungry Girl.com or get her newsletters? She has A LOT of recipes using those noodles. They might be worth checking out. I'll have to try them, too! Congrats on your latest drop! And yes, that IS a lot of butter.
