Hermiones Mom's Journal, 23 June 2016

I think I'm starting to get my eating act back together again. I guess maybe I was just bored and needed a little time out. I can't go completely crazy, of course, because I'm too busy right now to allow myself to make myself ill by eating say two slices of deep dish pizza, which might about kill me. So after about two weeks of eating more than I should, even if I wasn't being totally terrible, I seem to have gotten myself a bit better organized, better motivated in the past couple of days. What seems to have worked was to allow myself a few treats over a couple of days so that I stopped feeling deprived. I am very suspicious I was just so aggravated by the new set of dietary restrictions to prevent kidney stones that I was in temporary rebellion. But after I saw the doctor yesterday, it didn't seem quote so onerous. He told me the information I'd read about oranges and grapefruit was wrong, and that I can eat those. He confirmed the information that when you eat dairy with high oxalate food, the calcium and oxalate bond together and that prevents the crystals from forming and then becoming stones -- so I can have a piece of chocolate with a couple of ounces of skim milk; I can have spinach mixed with cottage cheese; etc. So maybe I just felt a little less aggravated about things. The catch is, when calcium and oxalate bond, you don't absorb EITHER the calcium or the oxalate, so that's a potential downside. But I think this is do-able.
