I think it's weird how they generalize one set of numbers and expect it to work for everyone in your weight/height range for weightloss goals. I know for myself if I go over 10% carbs a day I'm in big trouble with the scale and my pants. They should really find a way to make it more case specific. One size never fits all.

Generate* damn you autocorrect

Actually Christine I think generate and generalize both work in this context. ITA with one size never fits all. Fat Secret is a perfect example of that - different people have different success levels doing the exact same thing.

@NM What are you trying to figure out? Macros?

I'm on the Atkins program and think the percentages are: Carb 5, Protein 35, Fat 65. I don't use sugar. Most times I stick to the Low carb, high fat below Fat 70% Protein 20% Carbs 10%

That ratio looks to be in line with the food pyramid. I think these people here on FS are telling you that you have to find the ratio that will work for you. Many of us, here at FS, opt for less to no carbs. I strive for < 50 net carbs (carbs less fiber). And then keep my calories under 1200. I also eat higher protein. You can use the ratio you noted above, and then tweak as you go forward to accommodate your budget, calories, and weight loss statistics. I welcome corrections from all. There is nothing wrong with the ratios you provided in your post, but many of us have issues with the carbs. I for one can't eat a half cup of rice with my dinner and be satisfied till next morning. I'll be screaming for a bag of m&ms within 10 minutes. That's me. Many folks doing WW can handle the carbs without any problem. Keep us posted with your thoughts and decisions. I'm not an expert btw, and we do have some, like Phil and warren and others who have earned the expert level advisors.

Yeah just trying to figure out if i am eating too many carbs, too much fat, or too much protein. i am trying my damnest to get this stuff straight so i dont burn out on what i am eating and give up.

I know if I keep my carbs down I don't really need to worry about fat and protein levels. They pretty much fall into line naturally to make things happen a long as I mind my calorie limit.

I agree with Christine. I don't typically watch my protein or fat levels. As long as I keep my carbs down, the rest pretty much takes care of it self.

+1 The most important thing is calories, and you're in good shape on that. Beyond that, it's finding what works best for you. I would start with Lo Carb (<20g/day) first. That works for many, including me, for fat loss. See how it goes. See what works and what feels right. Go from there.

PS - Many folks get religious about diet, which should be ignored. Just like with religion, there are many paths to success, and you gotta pick the one that's right for you.

If you don't have kidney problems, I will definitely consider reducing the carbohydrate intake (remove the simple carbs and take complex carbs, but just to a minimum, I am trying to do just about under 25% on daily basis. Remember that cutting your carbs to a very low levels could be very difficult and if if increase protein, you could have issues down the road with kidney stones (Kidney problems).

Ok. well i am still under my daily calorie intake even with the way things are going with the ratio's. i guess i will find out in two days when i weigh.

I agree with Vickie & Jimmiepop...I have no issue with any diet...I just prefer it if people don't push their Way Of Eating that worked for them as "the be all end all" for everyone. Other than mine of course, which is the best!! Just kidding :-)

Yeah, it takes some playing around until you find what works for you. I tried just about everything under the sun when my weight was on the upside between 13 and 25 and nothing worked and was liveable until I landed on Atkins. Now I'm 37 and I'm giving it another go because it has worked for me in the past. I have to admit it was a HUGE letdown in the beginning. It didn't just magically work like it did before. I guess I got hit with the harsh reality that getting older makes weight loss harder. I decided to stick with it anyway because it has worked for me before and the thought of trying out 100 other things makes my head spin. Lol Luckily things are happening even if it's taking longer this time. I hope you find your sweet spot and figure out what's what for yourself without too many headaches and speedbumps! Although still scary at times, it's much easier to walk through the spooky diet forrest once you find your path.

I agree with a lot of what is said here. You need to find what works for you and what you can live with long term. Many years ago I shed a bunch of weight by effectively eliminating carbs. After about 1.5 years of that, I couldn't take it anymore. Fell off the wagon and went crazy eating again. For others, low carb is the answer. I firmly believe the MOST important thing is to log what you eat. Being aware and accountable is the answer. Once you KNOW what you are consuming and how your body is reacting, you can change - lower calories, lower carbs, etc. There is a direct correlation for me between logging and weight. If I don't log, I go off the rails (sometimes that is a slow derailment, sometimes it is sudden and catastrophic). Remember - YOU CAN DO THIS. The hardest part is making your health a lifestyle (logging, eating, exercising). If you can do that you will do great. I promise you will be amazed with how you feel. Final thought - take pictures. Get in front of a mirror (with no one else around), get as bare as you dare, and take pictures on a regular basis. You will appreciate having those when you start losing weight. The pictures can be very motivational. Go Navymom
