exumfats's Journal, 16 August 2015

My brother who has health problems had a birthday party which I attended. He kept asking me to have a piece of cake & ice cream with him. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, I had a small slice of cake. Also maybe a 1/4 cup of ice cream. It was about 5pm yesterday. I ate nothing else at his party, except a diet soda. Knowing I should not have eaten it, I ate no supper, or nothing else the rest of the day. For breakfast yesterday, I had an Atkins Shake, & one for lunch. That's it. Two low carb shakes, small slice of cake, & three small spoonfuls of ice cream all day long. And gained two pounds! Oh well, nothing surprises me.
230.0 lb Lost so far: 45.0 lb.    Still to go: 35.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Sometimes we actually need to eat to push the metabolism forward...

I agree about metabolism for most people. But eating more, consuming more calories does not work for me. Mainly if I take in 1200 calories and get good exercise from 30 mins to an hour a day, I'll lose a pound in a week. My arthritis has been getting worse, but I grit my teeth & carry on.

It's all about glycogen stores...each gram of glycogen (stored from Carbs from a "cheat day") is bound to 3-4 grams of hefty water. The good news is that as your body burns through the reduced carbs in the next few days of low carb eating and into your glycogen stores, the water attached to the glycogen will be flushed away and you'll see a nice drop in weight.

Oh yes, it will take about 2 days to shake all the water weight. I know that from experience, as I found out that when I plateau, one day of carb splurging gets me back on track - it takes me about 3 days to get back to the weight before the carb splurge. I do the carb splurge on fruit though, usually 3-4 lbs of berries (blackberries, raspberries or strawberries) or grapes or watermelon. But, if you don't mind me saying this, I'd drop the "Atkins shakes". They're a cheat practically and don't help much. Make yourself "fat bombs", they're easy to make, look in my diet menu and see the "mousse in a cup" and "chocolate fat bombs". Those will keep you full and in full-swing ketosis, and they are absolutely delicious as desserts.

Thanks for the comments. I agree with what you say. I've been doing Low Carb, Keto, Paleo for years, because I have type II diabetes, and that lifestyle keeps my glucose low,& I don't have to take insulin. I do keep a pk. of Atkins Shakes around for when I don't have time to make my own smoothie. I have been making fat bombs for a long time also. Last week I made some Orange Vanilla Fat bombs, & they were delicious.I make pudding, ice cream, & great coconut cake, and my version of Bulletproof coffee. I also make a mean hamburger roll. We've got a lot in common.

It's great that you've found something that works for you. Everyone's different so what works for one person may not for another. I wouldn't worry about your weight fluctuation right now unless it's 5 or more pounds between one day and the next. A lot can make that fluctuate. There are times when I've been doing like you and it took a week or more before I suddenly dropped 2-3 pounds. It definitely is frustrating but don't lose faith. By the way, I'm sure you do this already but I weigh myself at the same time after using the bathroom in the morning. Just out of curiosity, the past couple of weigh-ins I've weighed in the morning and evening and noticed I was about 2-3 pounds off. Keep up the good work and you'll see that weight drop before you know it! :)
