northernmusician's Journal, 10 August 2015

Nice day today gather huckleberries and firewood. The first freezer is almost full: raspberries, blueberries, huckleberries, Saskatoons and fish. Black bear season opens in a week, and moose season for bow opens two weeks after that. I guess I'd better plug in the second freezer.

Bear bratwurst is the best I've ever eaten. It's very like pork, if it's taken at a nice clean source, like a berry patch. Wish I knew where I could find some berries. ;)

Slightly different section of the country (I'm assuming), but you remind me of author Ted Kerasote ('Merle's Door') -- he lived/lives primarily off the land at the base of the Grand Tetons . . . a recommended book if you happen to be a fan of dogs.

NM, I've heard bear is pretty gamey, so berry patches make it better.... Now moose and elk are good though can be a bit tough. I love our venison around here--all grain fed, I do not like it from the mountains their food is different. Pheasant and wild turkey are also yummy here.

Losinit, I'll check out the book. I'm sure I'd love it. Yes... fan of dogs. :) Wholefood, only fall bear is good to eat. Spring bear has been in ketosis all winter. Yuck.

Laughing thought bears hibernated not go on a low carb diet over the winter....

Hibernation is a myth. Ketosis and gluttony, it's all they do. They're the ultimate binge dieters.
