JennBuck61's Journal, 16 May 2015

Slept in and took it easy today. Doing almost nothing at all except reading A book by Malcolm Gladwell and watching TV (BBC - I love British shows) in between. I didn't weigh today - actually, I forgot! But that's OK... I weighed yesterday. I lost 1 lb. It's warmer today but I won't be going outside. I am hoping that my daughter gets to go back to school next week - it's been a month since her high school teachers were on strike. It's very disheartening. I am still considering whether or not to transfer her to Catholic Secondary School ... I just don't want to play around with her education since the next two years are crucial for her university intentions.

On another front, we are checking into undertaking a MAJOR renovation at my mother's house. It is closer to the city and at a perfect location for everything - while, still having privacy and green space on her corner lot. The plan is to do an extensive renovation on the house and turn it into a 5 bedroom, four bathroom, two story brick house. My mother is getting older (she's 77 years old now) and we want to ensure she has all the creature comforts she needs. My youngest sister is also planning to move-in but needs some more space. We are creating a new space for Mom with a very large bedroom, walk-in closet and large ensuite on the main floor. The only other rooms on the main floor will be living, dining room, powder room and kitchen. The basement will be converted to a family room, large guest bedroom and bathroom. The second floor will have 3 bedrooms, an office and 2 bathrooms. The yard will be re-landscaped (mom loves her gardening) and the current garage will be rebuilt. It is a major undertaking so we are interviewing only well known, proven contractors including the Holmes on Homes folks (for those people who watch the show on Canadian TV). We have some quotes already - it's like building a brand new house so the quotes are quite a few hundred thousand dollars. The plan is to start the basement this year and possibly the main floor - hoping to be finished that part in six to eight months. The second floor will be next year! I shudder to think of how disruptive it will be for mom since when I did my kitchen only - my life was in disarray for some time. Anyway, it is the best way to go right now and my mother is happy. She wants her dream kitchen so she will get it - she's an avid baker and cook! Also, she won't have to do a lot of stairs being on the main floor.

Anyway, I am enjoying my long weekend so far - I hope you all are enjoying your Saturday. Be golden.
