Johanne's Journal, 17 September 2014

I took a full week off, starting last Wed. OMG! What a mistake. I started out moderately with a Cobb Salad. It had three foods I hadn't tested yet. By yesterday, there wasn't anything wrong I hadn't eaten. I woke up Sun. with swollen lips and bad congestion, not to mention the other symptoms. My excuse is that I wasn't home. I should have just gone hungry! This morning, I am a mess! AND, I gained 8 lbs in 7 days. If I didn't really believe in the elimination diet before, I BELIEVE NOW! I ache EVERYWHERE. My eyes were swollen and glued shut. I have enough snot for five or six people. My lips are swollen. I look like I had collagen injections! I have muscle cramping. And on and on and on! DON'T DO IT!!! There ARE food allergies! The problem is, since I went off program, I have no idea what they are! I was testing eggs when I went off course, so now, after going clean again, I will have to retest eggs. I can't believe, after eating totally clean for five weeks, I went so wonky! Well . . . onward!

I've been there. I know how you feel. I have a rather long list of foods I avoid now and I feel like a completely different person. Recovery from food allergies/sensitivities is possible, but that process didn't happen for me overnight. Patience, attention-to-detail and consistency will pull you through this difficult time. You can do it!

It happens. But you now are a believer, and will be more vigilant in the future. You should be able to get back on track pretty quickly. Sorry you are feeling so badly!

Thanks, Sweet2th. Yduj, I AM a believer. Only two days on track and I'm feeling better already. I was a believer before, but, when you start feeling better and people are being skeptical, you have a tendency to question whether what you're doing is valid. I won't make THAT mistake again! :-)

I had no idea that food allergies could have such a dramatic impact on one's health. The fact that you could even start that restrictive program and stick with it for as long as you did is a real testament to your discipline. You've done it before and you can do it again!

Hi, Coco. It's so good to see you! When you realize how terrible you feel when you eat foods you're sensitive or allergic to, it's really fairly easy to get back on track. The wrong foods cause issues within 12-72 hours after you eat them. This diet is a personal experiment. Everyone has different sensitivities and finding your own is an interesting journey.

Johanne - are you trying a particular diet? I have tried them all. I could be crowned the queen of diets. I had gained so much weight that about six months ago I started thinking I had allergies to some foods. For example, milk really hurt my stomach. But I discovered the Plan Z diet - you should check it out. I started it 53 days ago and I have lost 28 pounds and I feel great. If I gain weight, I do a "steak day" - that means eat nothing all day, but drink 100 oz of water. At evening meal I eat only a steak ( I love Porterhouse) and eat a piece of fruit like an apple or a peach and go to bed early, like 8:30. The next day I will wake up 4 pounds lighter.

Lynn, I'm on a fairly restrictive elimination diet at the moment. I've reintroduced a few foods already. Milk causes me congestion. Sulphites cause headaches. Bananas cause stomach and gut pain along with severe gas, etc. I've not heard of the Plan Z diet. I'll have to look it up. Thanks.

Interesting I have to look it up too. Congrats Lynn.
