Ok,

I have been slightly obsessed with my skin; what it will look like when I get to that stage of weight loss where it begins to sag. Anybody reading on how to effectively deal with this problem?

I have seen a few sites out there that talk about it. That you should loose weight really slowly, fish oil pills daily, lots of daily moisturizer and water. But the only one that makes any logical sense to me is the one where this guys talks about the subcutaneous fat (under skin fat) and how it is the culprit for sagging skin. I refuse to pay for surgery. (Mcdonald's should pay for my surgery!)

But, this guys recommends really over weight folks follow a body sculping diet program similar to a bodybuilder to reduce body % fat to low levels until that under skin fat "insulator", the last fat to be released in lipolysis, begins to dissolve into fatty acid for body fuel.

Anybody out there read about this or seen studies? I know that low body fat can be dangerous for women so I just don't know how low to go. I do have a ways to go but for now I am an avid believer in fish oil and take it daily. I am learning to drink more water....

I read that article before. I'm not sure I believe it, but like you I also have a long way to go. I say take care of your skin now and do the best you can. Incorporate some strength training and that should help. It sounds like you are on the right track and if there is a little loose skin, then so be it. I know I'm not even thinking plastic surgery. I keloid very easily so that would make the scars look worse. I already have two ugly scars on my ankle from surgery. I drink tons of water, moisturize excessively, and generally take good care of my skin, so I'm not gonna worry about it. Let's just focus on what we can change for now....

I think exercise is the key. I've noticed that people that lose large amounts of weight and worked out the entire time, including weights, generally had the least amount of sagging/stretching/loose skin when all was said and done.

Hi saw Star Jones on Oprah last week talking about how she managed to avoid loose skin for most of her body (arms and legs) with her rapid weight loss- and she claimed that pilates tightened her up. I think that article sounds right, I've been around bodybuilders all my life and they know what they are talking about when it comes to fat loss. Most of them (female bodybuilders) don't walk around every day with the very very low body fat that is not so healthy (it's extremely difficult to even get so low), but that they do for contests. Having low body fat for women can lead to the stopping of menses, but even then, they don't think it is dangerous. I think that anything under 12% would be avoidable. Believe me, most swimsuit models are at about 16 to 22% so you probably won't need to go that far! I'd love to hear what the program entitles actually- I'm in a bit of a plateau/rut right now! Oh- I wanted to mention that vitamin A and E might be good to add as they nourish the skin something lovely! :) But do be careful with the A, it is fat-soluble and you can overdo it! Best of luck!

i think that alot of it is genetics. Also important is how fast you lose the weight. Lose the weight slowly and work out to keep things tight. If you still have saggy skin you can blame genetics. You may not want to pay for surgery to fix the hanging skin, but when you reach your final goal it may seem the right thing to do. It all depend on how much you have and how much it bothers you. If you are one of the lucky ones you may not have this problem at all.
