If what this scientist is saying is correct, vitamin D might be taking credit from other substances in our skin which also get activated by sunlight, in helping to fight heart disease etc. What got him on to this, was the simple fact that, vitamin D supplements didn't make any difference in fighting heart disease but the vitamin D produced by the sun "appeared" (and the key word is "appeared") to have that beneficial effect. So, basically, he goes on to say that, whatever we are getting from the sun that helps fighting heart disease, is not the vitamin D but something else (nitric oxide). It seems that, unlike what happens with vitamin D, to get the benefits of it, you are not "specifically" after UV-b rays but after all UV rays. He still says Vitamin D is important for other reasons though: http://tinyurl.com/ojcw8zb

Interesting. I do know for me taking D's in the winter fights my hibernation mode some if I run out for a few days all I want to do is sleep.

Vitamin D is still needed for many things probably. It was just taking credit for some things that it's not responsible for heheh :)

He also warns there has to be a balance between overexposure to sunlight, which could lead to skin cancer, and the right amount of sunlight, which can ward off heart disease (which is much more common than skin cancer)
