GlennM's Journal, 19 January 2014

Hi all, my weight is up, so I will not do a weigh-in time for now. I have been doing Atkins, but not correctly. First, don't eat mints for bad breath. Second, don't eat nuts of any kind unless you can count one or two. Their caloric value is so high they negate things. I am eating way under what a 6 foot 2 man should eat... but I am on psychiatric meds that slow one's metabolism to a screeching halt and I have arthritis that makes walking very difficult. If I do Atkins and eat about 1,000 calories a day, I lose, which is not good. I have to do both. I have Atkins breath, but now I see that tweaking things here or there is NOT going to work. I have seen (for me) that Atkins only works if I do low calorie too. I will weigh myself daily too. The scale I have works when it wants to, so it is time to get a new scale. If you don't weigh yourself daily or weekly, you have NO idea where you're going and what you are/ are not doing right. I am doing OK. 1. No mixed nuts, peanuts, almonds, etc. 2. No more popcorn 3. No more mints. 4. Count calories too. 5. Walk if I can, which is very difficult for me now with the cold weather. 6. Weight daily so I can stop weight upswings before they get out of hand. 7. More water 8. Lift the weights daily I have here even if it is just a little, muscle burns fat. I did the weigh in, so I know what I am doing wrong, so here I go again.

Have you tried nuts in those 100 calorie packs? Just make sure you put the box away first (way out of sight) then leave the room with your pack - they weight approx. .66 oz. They are so much better for you than the popcorn.

I did. I will NOT eat them. They are constipating too. They slow down one's GI tract, which is not good. I would NOT recommend them at all if one is trying to lose. I will leave behind nuts and popcorn. I am muscular --- but my weight is just a bit too high, around 215 is OK. I can get there, I did it before.

I read one woman went through menopause and gained over 30 pounds. I went on these meds in 1995 and I gained 60 pounds in one year. It is like I am on steroid meds, and I refuse to take that stuff for arthritis. I got below 200 years back, but I was not eating. I was eating under 1,000 calories a day and doing low carb too. I am not making this up, either.

I appreciate your determination. Meds are a big obstacle. I know you are not making this up. My sister takes some kind of med for panic attacks and it hinder her losing. Hope you can find a balance soon.

Keep at it, you've got the right mindset. Me personally, I tried Atkins, I can't do it the restrictions are to extreme for me and I get terrible headaches when I tried that diet. If it works for you, go for it :-) As far as the nuts, a couple times a week is probably a very good thing to keep up, and I mean 1 portion here, 1 portion there... the health benefits & vit and mineral content is in these little gems is to high to ignore.

I am where I was one year ago or so, no change really, but I need to get this under control. I am tall, which helps. If one is 5 foot 7 or so at the same weight they look very heavy. I look like a football player, and I know some look OK at 225 as they are my height and muscular too. And so I am aiming below 220.

Star - Atkins is all that works for me with carb cravings. I know they are good for a person. I just need to get strict. I can't go for long walks now, the sidewalks are icy. Yes Buffy, I am on Klonopin, I read Stevie Nicks gained 60 pounds on it, and I am on one that is worse too. I take vitamins. For now I must get foods that are constipating like almonds, etc. out of my diet. I will do the almond milk.

As an example, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is 225 and my height and muscular and he looks thin. And so I am lucky I am tall like my father, I just need to lose to help get some of the weight off my aching joints too. I will get on here daily too, I must.... it helps. I hope the Patriots win today.

Tip for constipation - spinach. Put it into omelets, soups, stir fries, etc. Works magic - guaranteed!

Thanks Buffy, I have to get some. The arthritis is bad today, just a swollen joint feeling, it is cold out - 30s - and teens later in the week for a high, so the weather just sucks here unless one skis. I may have to move to a warmer climate as I get older, I may have no choice. I am not moving back to California, when I was in Los Angeles way too many earthquakes.

The Patriots lost... but I am not one who gets upset about sports anymore. I could take it or leave it. No big deal. I could care less who wins the Superbowl, I doubt I will watch it as my friends don't watch sports. I did get a walk in over one mile today. I am busy with my fourth book, I also need to try to get the first three completed ones out to literary agents. A fifth book of short stories sci-fi/fantasy is done in longhand writing and I hope to have that done too in final draft by end of summer. I am very busy with that.

Hi Bren. I am doing better mentally today. I ate very little yesterday. I am weighing myself daily now to be sure I don't gain. My arthritis is not as bad today. I am doing about five pages a day of a non-fiction book, and so I hope it will be done in its second draft (typed into a computer) by March, and completed too. I have three other quite long fiction books done. It is supposed to snow tomorrow. I am sick of winter. I may move at year's end. Hawaii is not out of the question, but I would have to go first and get a place... and then fly back and take the dog and go. I can afford it. Not a house there in all likelihood but a condo in a year or so after I move if I decide to go back there, I lived on Oahu, where Honolulu is... in 1985 and 1986. I know now what I need to lose, and to get about 212 is a decent goal by summer's start. I can do it.
