Has anyone heard of that rule "every inch you are above 5 ft, add 5 pounds to 100"?

I have heard a lot of asian people tell me this. So if i'm 5"4...my goal should be 120?

I decided I wanted to change my goal to 115, but don't know if I should.

The only true way to determine your target weight is to figure ot % of body fat. As this is what you want to lose. You will inevitably lose some muscles, etc, which is lean body mass, but you can regain some of it with weight training. As a woman you cannot go with very low body fat %. 20% is about the lowest you can go without causing hormonal changes in your body. The older you become the higher percentage is acceptable. All other formulas including BMI do not work as they do not take into account your body frame (even as an asian you can have heavy bones though it is less likely) and muscle weight. That is why the range for normal weight for people with same height is so wide and some people have extra fat to lose at low BMI and some are very lean even if they are over. You need to find a number that is right for your body, not for others, though some average guidlines can be helpful A lot of people at FS reach their goal and either adjust it again (lower or higher) or try to reshape their bodies through weight training.

Yes, that was an old standard people used to use (and some still do). It does give you an approximation, but doesn't take in to account a person's body type. If you are small boned, 115 might be a good weight for you. Take it 5 pounds at a time and see as you go. You want a weight than you will be able to sustain easily.
