Exercise tips for people with back problems
To burn fat, you should do something that keeps your heart rate up. However, it's hard to do those kinds of exercises when you have problems with your limbs. Maybe you should see a doctor, and he/she can give you some good examples of what will help your back and leg problem.
For now, just eat less on most days. Honestly, I've had a hard time losing weight after high school. But now, I just eat less and I hardly gain weight even if I consume a lot of food one day. I also get full really easily. You will get used to the amount of food you consume. So if you eat large portions, you will think anything smaller than that is too little and you feel hungry again. Just take it day by day.
My sister is your age and although she hasn't given birth yet, she has a hard time losing the weight she gained during university. One month though, she ate a good amount (under 1500 most times) and she lost 12 pounds in that month. A little goes a long way.

Hungry on 1500 calories
I just hope you don't have deeper issues related to body image distortion or eating disorders.
Because with your current height and weight, your bmi is 22. And since you exercise, your bpf probably counts more.
You shouldn't worry that much is all I'm saying.

Hungry on 1500 calories
Thanks for the information guys. Not trying to undermine the diets that you are on, but what concerns me is that you are 51, and of good weight. Why would you...restrict yourself that much? Your reason does not seem to be of health reasons, and you are definitely concerned about weight gain. Even if you are not anorexic or bulimic, this kind of mentality is very very dangerous, and in my honest opinion, a little extreme. Gaining weight is not the worse thing that can happen and there are more important things in life. Happiness and health are two of them.
Whatever diet you are on, as long as you are healthy and happy and not feeling hunger, that's important.
You're not overweight and you exercise. Eat well. Be happy.
edit: What I'm trying to say is, whatever you do, as long as you're not hurting your own self, be it mentally or physically, and if what you are doing makes you happy, then by all means, you should strive for it. Being healthy does not mean being skinny, is what I'm saying.

Hungry on 1500 calories
You can easily google a lot of 'trend' diets and which one is preferable. Between low fat vs low carb diets, here's what i found, which might explain why you are feeling so hungry at 1500 calories:
"A low carb diet will allow you to eat only small amounts of food, considering that fat and proteins have a high caloric intake. On the other hand, a low fat diet will allow you to eat higher quantities of fruits and vegetables, provided these have a low glycemic index. This means that you are likely to be hungry when on a low carb diet, while on a low fat diet you can eat more foods with a lower caloric index."
I've been on a medication that made me gain a lot of weight, and what helped me to lose it, was to stop consuming too much salty foods. A lot of the great tasting foods have MSG or something of the like, which makes people want to eat more it, thus making you feel more hungry. The less you have of it, the less you want it. Honestly, I can say that this is true, at least to me.
Mjgh06: The best kind way to lose weight is to go on a lifestyle change, and i'm sorry, but that sounds like a diet that will plateau your weight. I understand what it's like to be on medication and keep gaining weight because of it (I've had prednisone before) and i had gone up to 150 pounds even when I was eating very little. I got off the evil medicine only a month ago and am now, checking today, at 122 pounds. I always thought eating little will make you lose weight, but that's not the case. You really screw up your metabolism. I eat a whole lot right now, and I don't gain. Heck i'm having starbucks latte and a chocolate banana cake right now. Carbs do NOT make you fat. If you have too much of it, obviously, you will gain weight, but having a considerable amount will not cause you to gain weight.

Hungry on 1500 calories
I think depriving yourself of anything is stupid. If you want to have some chocolate, go ahead, just don't eat too much. Especially (MGJH06), that sounds like a nasty diet which will eventually back fire. I eat whatever I want in moderation and still manage to lose weight and keep it off.
A friend of mine is now only 98 pounds(at 5"1) because she lets herself eat what she wants. She lost over twenty pounds in just 3 months by doing so.
Morale of the day. Stop counting and start living.
