Ms Elizabeth's Journal, 27 August 2013

I love the gym. 5 sets on the hex bar deadlift, walking lunges, and planks later and I don't feel like killing anyone anymore. This may change during my afternoon commute but for now I am happy with my jello legs and after workout glow.

Now I'm motivated and googling weight lifting websites for more ideas on a routine I can do that includes more than just 3 things. Don't get me wrong.. the exercises I have are kicking my butt but I feel silly lunging around the workout machines to get my set of 12 on each leg in. Today there were two trainers that have started at the gym and they were obviously checking out everything everyone did which only made me more self aware that I'm a wobbly lunging mess. So I'm googling to see what other exercises are recommended for women who want to lift weights. There must be something that's like a lung for uncoordinated wobbly people! So far I'm the only girl I've seen lifting weights unless they are being assisted by a trainer. And.. then they complained the whole time. *insert eyeroll get away from my hex bar* This was before I got my warm fuzzy workout glow on.

I think I might try to talk hubby into a weight set I just have no clue where we would put it. If we had them then I could workout on the weekends without commuting an hour each way. Maybe if I stick with it and kick some serious butt he will take me more seriously when I tell him I want a weight set in the middle of the living room.

Glad you are doing so good at the gym!! You could always try to talk him into a bowflex instead of the weights. You get the same kind of lifting workout and its a little more compact!! Do you have a garage, or an outbuilding or shed close to the house/? You could always make a home gym in one of those, or maybe in an unused area of the barn?? Just suggestions, as I don't know how your house/farm is set up. It would be lots better for you on weekends and in bad weather!!

Great work in the gym!! As for something to replace lunges, I vote for squats and step-ups..

lunges are too difficult for my poor balance and bad knees too! I'm a chick that lifts, and I like it. the guy girl ratio in the free weight section at my place is probaby 12:1. Squats are easier. My PT gave me some to do where you stand on one leg and squat ever so slightly while reaching the other leg out and tapping the ground in front of you 10 times, then do to the side, then behind. Donkey kicks can get your hams & glutes - get on your hands & knees and kick one leg back up behind you 10 times. I also love bench press, and the assisted pull-up/dip machine, and any kind of row! (seated, low, high, and bent over!). My combo move is to take a barbell and do a bicep curl then push up into an overhead press and come back down.

I'm glad after the gym you felt better. Sometimes it just takes kicking your own butt for you not to want to kick someone else's. I hope you find some good exercises to do. I am intimidated by the weights because I have no upper body strength so I look like a wimp grabbing the 5 pounders, that may be why other women don't do the weights. Or, they may think if they do weights it will bulk them up. I don't know, but you should keep doing what you're doing. At least without the other women using the weights you don't have competition for them. :)

I'm one of those girls that complains about lifting weights with the trainer. But for me it's not because I don't want to do but because the trainer pushes me a lot farther than I would push myself & it really hurts sometimes. I haven't been able to do the dead lift yet. Mostly because I'm too scared that I'll hurt my back because I don't have health insurance & there's no way I could afford to pay the dr. out of pocket. Better be safe than sorry....for now ;)
