susand10's Journal, 22 September 2010

Yesterday was hungry, hungry. Had a BIG dinner out. Tried to pick the right foods...but definitely ate much larger portions than I needed. I am still learning about this site. I am a little confused about the "Foods" selections. For the same ingredient, the carbs seem to vary so much. Bad me....but I have been choosing the listed item that has the lower carb. :-P I will have to keep a closer eye on reading labels and figuring out portions (oz., servings, etc.) Also, wanted to record my 2 vitamins today and sorta guessed on which ones to use. What about recording any medication? (Example of 1 = High Blood Pressure Meds 2 = Acid Reflux Meds..etc.) To see any of my loss/gain patterns, or to get a greater understanding of carbs/calories/fats/sodium, and to get a handle on it.... I feel like I need to write down and record everything I put in my mouth. :-)

Right now, I'm not recording any supplements, as that's a constant for each day. However, especially considering Stef's (Ctlss) discovery of hidden carbs in a number of supplements, that would be where I would look first if I hit a stall. As far as looking up foods in the FS data base, I try to use the first listing that usually has no manufacturer associated with it; as an example, I looked up asparagus last night and went with the first listing. Before you input it, you can often look in the details window of that listing and change it from 1/2 cup, for instance, to 3 ounces, or 1 tablespoon, or whatever. I think what's confusing is that you can see 1 listing for a food that looks like 1 net carb, then another listing for the same food for 2 net carbs. But if you look carefully, a lot of the time the listing with 1 net carb is for 1 ounce, for example, and the listing with 2 net carbs is for a different weight! So, in reality, they're both giving you the same net carbs, IF they were the same weight. Does that make sense? Branded items are a whole lot easier, but be sure to compare the label on your product with what the database has. Sometimes the manufacturer has changed something and the database is no longer correct. Below the Nutrition Facts label on the left is a link to edit the info, so you can update it for all the rest of us.
