Hello world!!

I'm going to try out this journaling thing! I figure, what could it hurt for me to tell everyone how I'm doing with my weight loss journey. I don't know who's out there (yet, anyway), or who will read my journals. But at least this will hold me accountable.

Here's my story: I've been overweight since I was about 12 - 13. I was never an active child. I would much rather stay inside in the A/C than run around outside in the summers. My sister is the complete opposite of me. We've always said she got my dad's genes, I got my mom's.

In college, my roommate was a workout-aholic, and I didn't want that to rule my life. I had a full-time job, and wanted to hang out with my friends if I wasn't working or studying. She did get me to the Rec Center on campus a few times, but I never wanted to stay for more than an hour and she was fine with working out for three hours. Needless to say, I gained weight during college. Too much drinking and partying, not enough healthy food and fitness.

After graduating college, I found a job and moved just outside of Cincinnati, about 45 min from my family in Dayton. Weekends were spent hanging out with friends on Friday/Saturday and family dinners on Sunday evenings. Through the week, I would just head home after sitting at my desk all day, turn on the TV and veg out on the couch all night. At least in college, I was walking to my classes, and I was on my feet all night at work. I realized I wasn't getting any activity, and I needed to do something about it.

So... in January '09 I decided to join Curves. 30 min / day, 3 days / week. It kick-started my mentality that I needed to lose the weight. And, I did. I lost 40 lbs in a year. Not as much as I could have, but more than I would have by vegging out on the couch every night!

I decided not to renew my membership at Curves, (it was expensive! $44/mo) and joined an Urban Active for $14.99/mo no contract! I like the variety that I can get at this gym, opposed to the circuit training at Curves.

I just started a new job (after having my position eliminated at my old one) and no one knows about my weight loss journey here. I'm hoping to jumpstart my weight loss, yet again after an 8 month hiatus!

I'm borrowing Chris' idea of summarizing the previous day's events...

Yesterday, I stayed within my calorie allotment and worked out at the gym after work. I broke up my 30 min of cardio into two 15-min sessions. I walked (3.5 mph at 10.0 incline) for 15 min to get my heart rate up. Then, I did 20 min of weight training (mostly arms). Followed by another 15 min on the elliptical. I felt like I could have worked out longer, but usually leave after an hour. Today I'm feeling the burn though!

I guess one thing I need to learn about journaling is when to stop! Sorry for a long first post. I promise to have a shorter journal tomorrow!

(I'm borrowing this from Chris as well!)

Three things I'm thankful for:
* It's Friday!

Welcome to the wonderful world of journaling. I find it to be very cathartic. You seem to have the right attitude to succeed. Above all else, having the right attitude and approach seems to be what separates those who succeed from those who are constantly "trying". As a fellow SW Ohioan, I wish you well on your quest for good health.

I agree w/ rjenkins. It's so helpful to just put it out there. Good OR bad. :) And the gratitude thing I got from MadaboutMoose... you should add her as a buddy if you don't already have her... her journals are always inspiring to me.

Thanks for the comments! I've been MIA this weekend... But it's been gorgeous weather and I've been outside enjoying this fall-like weather! I'll look up MadaboutMoose, thanks Chris!
