Sandy701's Journal, 12 March 2013

FINALLY back to a "steady" weight after the wedding cupcake/peanut butter gain of about 10 days ago. Whew! Not exactly fantastic, but at least I feel things are moving in the right direction again...this is about a 4-pound loss in about 10 days....luckily part of that was probably water. Now onto 158 (and beyond).

This weekend I received an unexpected call from a neighbor whose husband is laid up again....and this is in addition to his other serious health problems that developed over the summer. Some of you may remember this couple from earlier journals of mine about a year-and-a-half ago. I helped them out again this weekend and I have a feeling I'll be called on this coming weekend, as well. But this time, I'm better prepared to set my boundaries.

With both their health issues having deteriorated, it's even more apparent that they need outside health services. Personally, I doubt that his health will improve very much.....certainly not enough to get them back to any semblance of normality to take care of their basic household needs and shopping. And without his ability to take care of driving and physical things, like carrying grocery bags, she can't meet those needs either. Previous, carefully-worded comments don't seem to have moved them toward getting home health services, and their needs have now increased. Unfortunately, there's really no prospect, that I see, of their situation changing anytime in the foreseeable future.

So I will probably help them one last time, letting them know that I can help on a one-time basis in a true emergency, but I'm not prepared to be a part of meeting these needs on an ongoing basis. I'll try again to gently encourage them to go to home health services, or their family! They truly have many more needs than neighbors, even barely-known ones such as myself, should be expected to meet. A few prayers on their behalf would be appreciated.

Oh, I do remember this situation from before, I do feel for you...setting healthy boundaries is best for everybody I am sure, I do hope they can get healthier as to better fend for themselves, as that is probably what they really want too. Good luck!

Thanks GG. Over a year ago, their situation didn't look very promising, but it did improve somewhat for a few months. One can always hope.

Sandy happy to see that you are getting back on track and I know that makes you feel better. I will send up a prayer that your neighbors get the help they need. You are right you must set healthy boundaries...even when it is hard.

Sorry to hear about your neighbors again. Good idea about the outside health care professional to be called in. There is only so much you can do. You take care of yourself and hope everything else is going well.:):)

Bren, I just don't understand why they're so reluctant to get outside help when they already have outside help for their lawn and some light housekeeping. I guess "this" outside help falls into a different category....reminds us all just how fragile life is. Thanks for the prayers.

Thanks for the prayers Jaime. Ironically, if I felt that their situation would eventually improve, I wouldn't mind helping them a bit more. But, I feel this situation is only going to get worse, so I feel that the sooner they enlist the outside services, the better off they'll be overall and better prepared for their future needs.

Laurie, it's odd, but this time, I feel more relaxed about this whole deal. Sure, I got pretty worked up after getting that phone call, but now, after hearing more about how things are for them, I truly feel that backing away is the best thing I could do for them....hopefully, it makes it more likely that this time they'll reach out to their family and/or those outside services. And, ultimately, having those people and services on board should make the future easier for them to manage.
