Rowanfair's Journal, 07 February 2013

I'm feeling a bit cranky about my standard Marie's Chunky Blue Cheese dressing. I have loved and eaten it for decades without ever registering that the #1 ingredient is soybean oil. Somehow I thought it was buttermilk-based. Kristen at Food Renegade periodically does label reading exercises and she did a salad dressing recently which made me wonder. The Marie's website says "expeller pressed soybean oil" but the bottle just says "soybean oil" so it isn't as "leap off the label" I guess.

And even if it had been buttermilk-based, the recent Food Renegade article How to Make Buttermilk showed a picture of a commercial buttermilk label and it is just crazy.

I had an avocado with pesto instead of salad dressing for breakfast and it was fine. But I eat a lot of salads and I really don't want to have to get into making my own dressings! Gah. This eating cleanly can be a real pain.

Rowan, I have been using Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk recipe mix with mayo and full fat buttermilk...not perfect but better than most bottled dressings. The other alternative I use is straight olive oil and red wine vinegar. That is probably the most natural one I can get. Sure do wish they would make dressings more natural, but then they would have to be refrigerated and the shelf life would be very short. Oh, what we give up for convenience! Glad you are back! Have a great weekend!

Well, the thing about Marie's is that it *is* refrigerated. Guess I'll scope the other refrigerated dressings before I totally give up. (And I admit I'm finishing my current jar.) I do like just cottage cheese on my salads so maybe I'll go back to that. I just have never really liked the taste of vinegar so few dressings have ever appealed to me. It is good to be back. Hopefully logging food again will help get the weight back off.
