There is probably going to be TMI here for anyone else to want to read it but this is my journal and I need to record how I feel. Yesterday my period started with no real warning, except that if I look back at the last week or so of uncontrollable munchies that probably should have told me something!

I'm sure I'm perimenopausal, although hormone tests suggest that there are no changes in my hormone levels yet. However, my periods have become very irregular over the last two years, from an 18 day cycle to missing two consecutive periods completely, whereas I was always an exact 28-day person.

This time it's very early, about 21 days, so unexpected. Last night's food consumption doesn't bear recording - I don't want to know the calorie cost! I went to bed at 9.30 (I usually go an hour or 90 minutes later) and went to sleep almost right away.

I slept through undisturbed for almost 10 hours (my usual wake-up time is 6 am, with or without an alarm). Today I feel completely different. There is a lightness of being and a clarity in my head that hasn't been there for weeks, I've been feeling fuzzy. I feel positive and optimistic and I'm sure I can use this to my advantage in the diet and eat well today.

I have recorded all this because even after 40 years it still amazes me how much those monthly hormonal flluctuations can affect us both physically and mentally and it my case it's been something I've never got used to, inasmuch as I frequently fail to recognise where my negative feelings are coming from. Despite a physical heaviness that's still there today and the stomach cramps and backache that go with it I feel this indescribable lightness and mental clarity that's a 180 degree change from how I've felt over the last week or so. Let's use it to positive effect :)
