Vcravener's Journal, 29 December 2012

Well so far today I've been able to stick with my 20 net carb goal. I completed it yesterday too. I find myself wanting to eat in the evening and I don't know why I'm hungry . I eat a 4 oz of protein with each meal and have two nice salads a day with eggs and cheese but I'm still hungry. I drink 86 oz of water a day. What should I do or eat after 6 PM.

Initially when I started Atkins, I would keep some cooked hamburger patties in the fridge to heat up when I felt hungry. I didn't have to do this for very long. I also noticed that I wanted to eat in the evenings. Even though I didn't feel bloated full, I knew I had ate enough and chalked it up to withdrawals. After a few days, evenings didn't bother me anymore. Don't worry too much in the beginning about the amount of calories. Focus on the carbs. Once your body is through going through withdrawals, you will naturally eat less. Some other snack ideas... kale or seaweed chips. Sound disgusting...mighty tasty. Lightly spray with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake until crisp. Cheese sticks and pepperoni, 1 serving of almonds, sugar free jello with a dollop of cool whip to make it feel decadent. Hope this helps...Good Luck!

Good suggestions 1973drl. I started Atkins a month ago, so I am no expert, but I can share my experiences thus far. I never ate supper before 8 pm pre-Atkins. As soon as my sons hit their teens that's when they wanted to eat (since teens eat a mini-meal at 4 hahaha). My husband died 7 yrs ago, but he liked late dinner too. As soon as I started Atkins I experienced what you describe. Just so hungry! What 1973 said about don't worry about calories in the beginning is extremely helpful. If you will focus on keeping the carbs down and eat more fat you will find that fat satiates your appetite. It's just upside down from what you've been doing all your life, right? The break-in period doesn't last forever which is good news! One thing that helped me was to enter a night time snack in my food journal early in the day. That way I didn't end up hungry after dinner without a spare 2 or 3 carbs for snack. From there, I started kinda making a skeleton plan of my dinner early in the day too based on the same logic. Now I eat around 6:30 and have a lil something at 8:30 for a snack and I am happy. As your body adjusts to the lack of carbs you can get clogged, so at that point eliminate most of the cheese and sub in other foods. I ate plain as all get-out in the beginning; egg and breakfast meat in the morning, salads with meat on top for lunch and dinner. Our daily check in group has a recipe forum; do yourself a huge favor and go read it from the beginning. You will be so much happier when you are eating recipe type food. A lot of the people are married and when you cook recipe type meals, the spouse can eat the food but add some things for example tortillas with a mexi-dish for him. Also that forum mentions a couple of good low-carb recipe blogs. I don't know if this helps; I hope it does. After you get over the hump you can start lowering your calories, but for now just carbs. Keep protein-y snacks like 1973 suggests and because I am a bad girl, you might consider the Atkins shake at 2 net carbs for night snack. I am post-menopause so I crave chocolate at night, the shake is so filling and I go to bed happy. Word of caution, keep Atkins products to a limited amt. during Induction. i.e. no two shakes a day, steer clear of the bars they make (some claim they cause a stall). Lord, I feel like I have worn you out with advice. Take what you will, discard what you don't like. ♥
