Hildi72's Journal, 12 September 2012

Hmm..sooner or later this plateau shall pass. I just have to be patient...

Last night, I was so exhausted that I passed out around 10am. I got up early this morning to weigh myself to see that I am stuck at or around 229. Ever since that second week in London, I have been hovering around 231 to 229. Now, in between that I had a trip to Miami, a birthday celebration and a return to work. As I ruminate here, there are a few forces at play:

1) Ate cake and now body wants more. I cannot deny that my sweet tooth is calling to me. Red Velvet cake and chocolate in general are two of my favorites. I have been trying to ween myself off the sweets..I think by Thursday I should be back to 100% no sweets.

2) Getting back to the routine: I am back to trying to stay under 1200 to 1500 calories a day. I need to make sure that my caloric intake does not rise and wipe away all the hard work of the past 45 days.

3) Sensible workouts - After a long day at work I am tired, I have started a plank challenge with an FS friend but I need to make sure that my exercise is moderate so I don't burn out. I will be adding the crunch routine probably tonight and then assess how I feel after a week.

4) Readjustment - I think my body is getting used to a caloric restriction. I am not feeling the burn as much as before so I may need to adjust the limitations.

5) Constipation - When on an intensive protein based diet, the C word always shows its ugly head. When you feel like you are pushing rocks, you have to make sure you are properly hydrated. I am going to up my water intake and see if I eat yogurt to get my innards moving again.

I would like to thank all who read and comment on my journal. Its tough enough to have the courage to capture your thoughts and frustrations on here, but I haven't seen any malice in any post. Instead, I see support and encouragement and it truly does mean a lot. Thank you all.

Did you see the stuff I wrote about carbs and cravings yesterday? There is another book called "Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it" that really explains the science of carbs and cravings and weight gain. The author suggests keeping carbs under 50 when you are trying to lose weight, at least for those of us who are affected by carbs. Once you stop that insulin response, the cravings really do go away. The books I suggested yesterday were more about the emotional part of the craving, but really, it's all tied together. Weight loss is so much more complicated than "calories in, calories out." I bought some fiber gummies at Costco yesterday, hoping to help the same problem. BTW, I love your lists!

Lists...I love lists because it helps me concentrate my thoughts. For today's meal, I went pure protein and an apple. Didn't feel like a salad.. Yeah, its funny because when I was cutting carbs down I didn't feel the craving. But the minute you get some starchy carb in you...BAM...you start craving it again..almost like your body remembers why it wants it. I add fruit to provide some fiber and hopefully keep me happy and not hungry. Mmm, fiber gummies sound good. Talk to you soon..

It has nothing to do with your body's memory, everything to do with insulin...Keep the sugar down-->keep the insulin down-->keep the cravings down. It really works.

Yeah, carbs were my crack. The Insulin stuff seems very viable. After eating sweets you get that rush, I am sure that the insulin response does a lot to deter weight loss.
