Day 197- RR & more…… (LONG) So much to talk about, but I will start with the 5K I ran this weekend. Other items I will hit on future journals: broke into the 170’s, no longer obese, diet, water and more.

So for the race report, after last week of running a trail run that was not a true 5K, I and my son decided to enter another race this past weekend. It was a road race for a Kids FUND. It was only a few mins from home so we jumped on it. It turned out to be over 300+ runners and walkers, not sure why they did not separate the runners from walkers? My goal was to run it in under 30 mins and to run the whole thing NO walking. We got there nice and early to get a front spot at the potta-pot, you always have to pee before anything! Getting there so early gave us a chance to see how the other runners prep for their run, it is funny to watch some of them. One thing that struck me a little odd was a lot of runners had on BRAND NEW running shoes, you could tell from all the BRIGHT Adidas colors. Everything I have ever read, says not to run a race in new shoes? But, the trail run had a rep from Scott shoes there and she was promoting how you could run a race in new ones and rambled off a lot of names of pro runners that did it. Anyway, they did not get us set up at the start line by PT. I kind of wish they did to move ALL the walkers to the back. I and my son started together and he was with me for about 3 seconds before he took off. One thing we did not plan on was hills, where we live on the other side of the river it is flat, but this coarse had quite a climb out of the gate. My report shows about a climb of 75’ on the first hill that is about ¼ mile, so that was some pain right off the bat, but this coarse was one where you double back for the second half so you knew you got to run down hill at the end. I found myself really watching my pace and trying to conserve energy, but afterwards realized I could have burned a little more on the first mile, I was too conservative. After mile 1, I shifted in my cruse mode and just chugged away the rest of the race. I passed quite a few runners through the whole run and rarely got passed by many. The ones that bug me are the ones that fly by you and get a 100 yds ahead and start walking or slow way down and you have to pass them once again, and again, and again….. their was young couple that kept doing this to me and on the last hill, I just kept going and left them for good ;-) it felt good, BTW, they were some of those folks with the new Adidas that just came out of the box, LOL. So when I started my decent into the finish line, there were a few turns, I had a hard time deciding how fast to run and how to run downhill. I held back again in fear of hurting myself, again looking back I should of picked up the tempo. As I turned the last corner I saw the finish line, clock was about 28:40 and went into long strides and past a few more runners as I cross the finish line at a clock time of 29:12. I was quickly pushed to the side to avoid the vomit all over the ground. My son greeted me shortly after and pointed out all the folks he watched vomit after he finished in the low 22’s. I could not get over all the folks that vomited, don’t they know better than to jump off the couch and run a 5K? Final results for my son was 21st overall and 4th in age group again , and my big surprise of the day, my chip and official time: 28:59.7, 74th overall, 9th out of 26 in my age group. I BROKE 29 MINS! and I am competitive, this is bigger than most will realize for me.

So we think we are going to enter another this weekend. I live in an area where we can run 3- 5K’s a week there are so many. That brings up the question of how many to run in a month? Year?..... I don’t want to get burned out, but I also want to improve my time and running. My son goes back to school in another 2 weeks for soccer training camp, so I think we want to squeeze a few more in. It also has given me and my son a sport where we can both compete and dad is not on the sideline coaching and yelling.

I have also realized I need to go get fitted for running shoes. Funny how you don’t realize it when you start running. I would never run in the shoes I started in 5 months ago, but I do like the shoes I have now, just want proper fitting ones. I have set a goal of getting them in 2 weeks when the next paycheck comes in. I have gotten over the ‘I really need to spend $100+++ on running shoes?!’ phase, LOL. They will be the most expensive shoes I have ever had on my feet.

Goals for the next race: get started at a better pace, use my APP on my phone more for pace and status and improve time below 29 mins.

I have so much I need to journal about, but this it for today.

fantastic job! I only wear my running shoes when I run so they look new for a long time-could this have been the case for some of your racers? Did you have a setlist of music that helped you persevere?

You've got a nice Father and son hobby going one - keep up the good work and good luck on the shoes.

Yes, I have a playlist for running, but I put it on shuffle. I have not taken the time plan something out to my timing, but my son has. Maybe they do save their shoes? With my feet I would not risk the pain, long story.
