GlennM's Journal, 29 July 2012

It is time to come back. 1. I am gaining weight from meds - including a pain med. 2. I am not getting enough exercise due to back pain that is chronic, and sometimes endless it seems. And so here I am. First thing is to get on here before I go on FB, and every other place I surf the web. And so I am back, I will be on here at least in the morning once or early afternoon and then the evening. It is also time to keep track of what I am eating too. That is always a key to losing weight. I may need back surgery soon, there is just too much pain there. The books are going well, I am on the final edit of the second of three books. Once the three are done I will be sending all of them out to literary agents within the next month or two. And I know now is the time to get back on here seriously. I have been unable to exercise. Low carb may be the way to go and I will try to ease into it in the next week. Doing gluten free isn't likely too, it would be just too difficult. Hope to get on here soon and start posting on other people's posts and journaling.

Hi Bren - I am back to stay. I need to be on here. One would not be surprised when they stop watching their weight - they will gain. Yesterday I did walk a bit, more than usual. I am nearly 2/3 of the way through the final draft of the second book, so in a matter of weeks I will be sending all of the first three books out to literary agents. The weather has been rainy over the weekend, but we needed the rain. It is good to be back and I am back to stay.

Hi Cindy - I am back for good and will go on here twice a day at least. I am busy now with the books, I went to the library so the dog or other distractions wouldn't get in the way so I fixed up one of the short stories for the fourth book. Anyway, I did well today with the dieting, low carb may be the answer - I will see. Atkins ongoing weight loss is basically a diabetic diet. My BS is fine. My cholesterol is excellent too after taking a high dose of Omega 3. I hope to get on here in the coming days and start to comment on other postings soon.

Hi Glenn, I think its neat that we came back on the same day. glad you are enjoying Atkins so far. I am doing well and have been writing as well, although the book I am working on is nonfiction.

Hi Cindy, I was going to do a nonfiction book based on a local crime spree in this region, but I figured it would have been too difficult to get into the court and things like that. And so I passed on that. (The crime from late 2009 has yet to go to trial). I am NOT doing Atkins this time around -yet. I am doing calorie counting. I am aiming for under 2000 calories a day, I think it will work as I am 6'2" tall. I need to get walking too, which has been a problem due to arthritis, but it is helping that I am going to a decent chiropractor now. It is a big help. I will have three books done within six to eight weeks, ready for submission after multiple drafts being done. I hope to have Book 4 typed up in its first draft by the end of the year. It is a goal anyway, and I hope to have some sort of book deal by year's end too. Is your book about crime? Often nonfiction is, my three are fiction and not in that genre, though the western has some bandits in it.

Bandits- that sounds fun! I work in mental health and am pursuing a master's degree in that field, so my book is about recovery from mental illness. My writing pace has been slow and I am trying to pick it up. Maybe I need a support website for writers, too ;)

Hi Cindy. Read and write. Reading will give you ideas from the strangest of places. I had a mental breakdown, so maybe I could add some pages into your book too. I am better now as you can see.

HI Glenn, I do love reading. I had a mental breakdown, too, at 25, so I can relate. I learned more from that than 4 years of college! it will be in my book. What helped you get better? (for the record, I am better now too ;)

Hi Cindy - I have had an enormous amount of healing since the beginning of the year. I would make sure you are taking enough Vitamin D. And C and B complex and a Multivitamin. But the #1 thing to help is Omega 3 from fish oil. Not the standard dose, higher. (I figured this on my own). A doctor recommended it, another told me to take a higher dose for the arthritis. Then what happened was a healing. But something had to take its place right, from that crazy sort of feeling? I was depressed for a few months. It passed. Think about it, where did all of our ancestors live? Near rivers or the ocean or a lake, be it in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia or the Americas. They ate fish daily. And so we need the Omega 3. And it heals the brain, if anyone is having any issues I recommend it. A tablespoon at least of cod liver oil, not a teaspoon. If one uses capsules - then chew them up if you like fish - I do, and the capsules can upset one's stomach. I recently found out about something called Bach's Rescue Remedy Spray. I take it at bedtime. There are many variations of this my twin sister told me, a woman at a bus stop told me about it. It calms one down. Don't stop taking psychiatric meds if you are on them. But I am on half the dose of one strong one, so all of this stuff is helping. Get Magnesium, Potassium and Calcium too. And in six or eight months, in time you will see a healing, I did.

Cindy - also take L-carnitine. It is a bit pricey, but one really can only take one a day, the body can't tolerate much more than that. I also take Turmeric, Ginger and Grape Seed Extract for inflammation. There are a few other vitamins and herbs that heal the brain, and that is what one must attempt to do. Some of it I buy at Walmart, but one can often find supplements at places like CVS at a buy one get one free sale price.

Thank you Glenn! actually I have been mentally healthy without treatment for several years. The nervous breakdown I was referring to was in 2002 and I have since recovered and been helping others. I was just curious what had worked for you because I always want to share info with my clients about what others have tried. Nutrition is definitely very important. I like how you've learned and practiced so specifically how nutrition can affect your mental health. When I was getting better I did not take vitamins but I had to start eating enough and eating balanced, regular meals. I am vegan but eat a lot of flaxseeds to get omega 3s.

I had five years of complete and total - in one word - imbalance. I was very messed up in a haze for over a few years, and then for a good three years after that. Nutrition will not necessarily 'cure' things as some people believe, but it can greatly alleviate symptoms of mental illness. I told a neighbor down the street, as he and a woman there have mental health issues. He said, "A teaspoon of cod liver oil is enough." I told him it is NOT enough. NOT. One has to look at how to 'heal' the brain, as there is some problem there to begin with, or one would be fine. So meds have there place, but so does nutrition, and btw - the fish oil crashed my cholesterol to NORMAL. A HIGH dose must be taken not one or two pills a day or week... a high dose will knock out the need for dangerous statin drugs, and this is me speaking from true experience, and I like to help others once I have knowledge, I do not keep it to myself.

That started nearly eighteen years ago, when I was 32.

'their place' above paragraph.

Ha, you must live next door to one of my clients. I wish that one teaspoon of cod liver oil would do it for him!

Yeah, he more likely needs a 'tablespoon' for starters...
