LSG417's Journal, 22 March 2018

I am really trying to cook healthier, not just for myself, but my hubby too since he's diabetic. It's hard a lot of times tho, because he doesn't seem to have a palate for food like I do. He will try new foods, but it's discouraging when I find a new food or dish that I like (and even my kids like), but he doesn't care for it. I get tired of the same stuff all the time and love creating new dishes. What gets really frustrating is when he says something new is great, but when I make it again, he decides he doesn't like it or isn't in the mood for it. I sure don't want to cook a separate meal for him. Most of what he likes as regular meals aren't good for his diabetes. I can't force him into healthy eating tho.

You're right...but I always remember what my mom used to say when we were growing up... "It's a kitchen, not a café." That having been said, a certain husband and I have a similar dilemma...so I feel your pain.

This sounds so much like my life! I understand completely how you feel!

Dang, what a dilemma. I haven't any (nice) advice, but then I have never had to deal with a similar situation. Sure hope you're able to work something out. 🤔

I've been with the mister for 12 years now. Slowly this last year I have quit catering to the husbands taste buds. If he doesn't like something he can make a sandwich. Good news is, he is making less sandwiches and trying more foods (it sounds awful to talk about him like he is a little kid). The other night he ate salad and chicken and didn't even ask if that's all we were having (I was a little floored). So my point is, don't care what he wants (well mostly), you cook, you pick!

Similar situation with my late husband.

LSG417. Let him plan and prepare his own meals

I eat whatever my wife puts in front of me, and if it's intolerable, in the unhealthy sense, I'll find something to eat on my own. Along with the "cafe" statement above, my mom used to say this ain't no restaurant. I guess I was fortunate that in a one income household, and five of us siblings we had to eat what was provided. That meant beans and bread twice a week. Try asking him what meals are deal breakers, or which days he wants to provide dinner. On that day if you don't like it you can fix what you want, and you still cook once. Sorry for the sticky situation. When my wife fixes something too unhealthy I just open a can of black beans and eat them unheated. :(

Yep, there were 6 of us kids and Mom always if you are late for the meal or don't like it then go hungry. We all learned to cook at a young age and all of us are good eaters. I did the same thing with my kids and they are good eaters as well. My husband won't eat Vegan so he just fixes himself a sandwich when I make a vegan meal.

My husband isn't horrible about this. If he doesn't care for something, he tries to let me know in a way that doesn't hurt my feelings. Last night he told me to fix whatever I needed to fix and he'd deal with it if he didn't like it. It's more me, I guess. I've always loved to cook and create new things. My first (late) husband never complained and ate what I put in front of him. My current hubby has more discriminating taste buds I guess, lol. I just want so much to help him be healthier, because left on his own, he'd eat a bowl of cereal. Which he did a LOT during his first marriage because his wife hates to cook. I think that's part of it too. I want to provide good meals for him. He told me he appreciates how I take care of him and the boys and how I care about his health. My kids love most of what I cook too, so I know it's just his taste buds and not my cooking.

What to eat is really important for someone with diabetes. You have done your best shot.

He sounds like a good guy and y'all will work it out. Will he take a walk or ride a bike with you? Exercise is important and really helps the sugar level to stay down.

@Ginger He IS a good guy. He will walk with me some and he is trying to incorporate a little more exercise into his day. He knows what he needs to do, it's just making the commitment to do it. He stays so busy right now tho. He's a loan officer with a mortgage company and he works late a lot of days. Some days he doesn't even eat lunch! Which isn't good. He does get to work from home most days, so I at least can go visit him in his office for a few minutes. He just has never liked having to think about his food choices, he was diagnosed roughly 25 years ago. He was in really bad shape then, could barely walk! I just know if he doesn't get it under control, I may end up widowed again...too soon (I was 43 when my first husband passed).

I know how it can be challenging to have the need to eat a certain way but having family members (husband and kids) not diggin' your meal. It's one of the reasons I'm as overweight as I am. But since this diet has started and I've stuck to my guns, they are accepting what's on their plate. My husband hates a lot of veggies, but won't say a word about it. I try to add rice to their meal or pasta in the side, something they really like, but I can leave off of my plate.

How about mac n cheese George will eat it even when I use rubber pasta (pasta zero) I've added a can of tuna too. I still eat like I'm a diabetic too afraid to venture lol

My husband is really good about eating what I cook and he is diabetic too! Only thing is I know he’s eating cookies and mms after I go to bed 😉

I am glad he will walk with you. We find it is a good time to talk with each other since it is about the only time Danny doesn't have the TV running. (that and i have never allowed a TV in our bedroom.) You just keep encouraging him and showing him by example how to eat better.

LSG, it sounds like you two are very good to each other. I'm sure you'll figure something out. Maybe take his favorite dishes and find a similar recipe and tweek it into a healthy version, but just a little at a time. It's nice to hear how a couple cares and looks out for each other. Hopefully he can start following your example.

We looked at a few diabetic cookbooks to try and find "friendly" meals. but we really just look at the foods we like and then try to make healthy (diabetic friendly) adjustments. I will admit though that I really love to cook and try new things so I don't have the same issue you are facing. you are welcome to go through my food diary to see how I work my meals to accommodate the carbs and balance through the day.
