Socolova's Journal, 10 September 2014

Well, today has been a frustrating day. Not in regards to dieting, etc...that's all going just fine, dropping water weight...yadda yadda. Work was fine, yadda yadda.

Here's what frustrated me: I'm hosting a family reunion for my mother's side of the family next weekend. I live in Wisconsin, the reunion is in Illinois so I'm doing this all via internet/phone. I paid for the rental, I paid for the napkins, silverware, tablecloths. I also offered that if people didn't want to bring a bunch of meat to grill that I would just buy pulled pork from our local butcher and bring that, which will end up costing me another $60. Of course, everyone was a-okay with that (because that means they don't have to bring anything more than a stupid salad or cookie tray). So then, my stupid cousin sends me a message that the reunion is the day of a beerfest in Iowa and her/her hubby go every year and yadda yadda. Ok, so after weeks of trying to figure out a date for everybody, all this food planning, all this other crap....you decide you'd rather get drunk with your husband. Ok......nice. THEN, my stupid brother chimes in to not expect him to stay long because this is his first weekend not on call in a month. AND, he says he's only bringing a package of hot dogs and buns for the kids and to not plan on him bringing any more than that(not even the charcoal for the grill). ARRRRR!!!

First of all, I didn't HAVE to do any of this. Everybody kept saying how fun it would be and nobody took charge, so I did. Second, when did family time become such a chore and inconvenience? We cousins all grew up together very close and now that we're adults it's fun to get together. Especially, with their kids now. We haven't had a family reunion since before my grandma died 10 years ago!!!! Would it kill everyone (who all still live in the area) to show up for 2 hours of family time!!??? Or to show a little gratitude?? SHEESH!!!

And then I get a Facebook update from the place we got our dog about some idiot who left a dog in a sealed Tupperware container outside of a shelter in Florida in 90' weather. Nobody knew how long he was stuck in there but he was drenched from head to toe from the condensation of his breath, if that tells you anything. Seriously, wtf people???

Rarely anybody appreciates the planner of events. They don't realize how much work, time and money it is. You can always vent here, we don't mind :-)

We are so alike in certain ways, it's almost unsettling. I am always the event planner/hostess for virtually all vacations, get-togethers, parties, etc. You name it, I plan it. And over the years, I've had to come to grips with other people really pissing me off, not caring as much as I do, and basically just being flakes who only care about themselves or would rather go shoe shopping (I kid you not! One person actually told me she was going shoe shopping instead of attending someone's WEDDING?!?! I get it. Trust me. I feel your frustration. Just know that you'll never plan something that will satisfy everyone. Nor will everyone want to go or even be remotely polite and appreciative of your efforts if they do end up going (I vaguely remember someone throwing a major fit because I didn't have anchovies to add to the other 483,568,231.5 ingredients I spent SIX HOURS prepping for a "make your own pizza dinner" for 45 people.) Mostly, they just act like unappreciative douche-bags. You can't take it personally as an insult to your planning skills/effort. Just do your best, twinnie. Don't try to do too much and make yourself nuts to make others happy. Don't sweat too many details because your event won't somehow become magically amazing if you bring the right brand of beer/chips/ice cream/anything. Just try to remember why you're there to begin with - to spend time with your loved ones. No amount of pulled pork is going to make or break your event. And when all else fails, just close your eyes, count to ten and take a few deep breaths. I'm sure your event will be as awesomely amazing (or is it amazingly awesome?) as you are. :)

I understand. We have a hard enough time getting together with the kids and they only live 12 miles away. I am afraid that Facebook has replaced relationships; no effort involved.

Sweets, I heart you, I needed to hear that :) DK, it's so true.....it's like just one sentence or comment makes up for seeing people...maybe I'm more sensitive to it because we just moved in the last 6 months and we rarely see anybody but each other...idk, I value that time so it's frustrating when others take it for granted...

That's why I don't really have a personal Facebook page. I think it detracts from building quality face-to-face relationships. I'm not looking forward to having a Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/YouTube/Pinterest/Vine account for my health coaching business, but they are a necessary evil for businesses these days, I'm afraid. (Oh, and I heart you too, my dear. Keep your chin up!)
