Today is my mother's birthday/el cumpleaños de mi mamá, so we called her this morning on our way to work. She was 'un poco acatarrada' (had a bit of a cold), though she didn't sound it, but seemed otherwise in great shape for someone who had just turned 81.

It's also the anniversary of my diet. One year ago I started the process of shedding weight. My nephrologist told me that I was at a delicate point. My health was still fair, but it could degenerate unless I lost weight. Then he asked me if I had considered bariatric surgery. Instead, I decided to cut back on calories. Immediately.

On the issue of health, he didn't know half of it. On the issue of weight: on 25 March 2010, I weighed 380 pounds (172 kilos, 27 stone 2lbs), itself a decline from my peak weight of 397 lbs (180 kilos, 28 stone 5 lbs) the previous summer.

Today, the first anniversary of my decision to eschew bariatric surgery and lose weight by effort of will through diet, and now diet and exercise (since my recovery from serious illness late last year, about which more at another time) I weigh 234.2 lbs (106 kilos, 16 stone, 10 lbs). That's a drop of 148.8 lbs (66 kilos, 11 stone) in one year.

I am focused on how far I have to go to achieve my goal (70 lbs, 5 stone, 31.75 kilos), but I am pleased to see that I have now gone more than two-thirds of the way to my target weight of 164 lbs (11 stone 10 pounds; 74.4 kilos).

I still have quite a way to go, but I will get there.

Weight is sometimes hard to understand unless people also state their height. I'm 6'1" at 173 lbs right now. You really are an inspiration to all... having lost almost 150 lbs in one year. They say as you lose, it gets harder. That part is somewhat true, since you need less calories the smaller you get. I would keep up the exrecise at the gym, it will help maintain muscle, thus allowing you to burn more calories too. You might eventually plateau, but never consider giving up. Those plateaus can always be broken. Have a pleasant Friday!
