HealthyBabs's Journal, 08 November 2010

Back on the treadmill already this am. It is 7:30, I did 15 minutes and had breakfast, now just to journal a bit then shower and off to the office.
Interesting little tidbit about the treadmill this am. I purposely only did 15 minutes because I wanted to see how many calories it says I burned for that 15 min. It was 100 exactly. I was up to 6% incline and at 3 mph for most of the time except warm up and cool down of a minute each. I wear a BodyMedia Fit which I synched up just before I did the treadmill and also again just after. It says I burned 280 calories. I also checked a couple of other calculators to see what they say 15 min on treadmill burn and all said 100 give or take a few calories. I think most of these calculators if you are not given the option to say your incline or speed calculate at 0 incline and about 2.5 - 3 mph.
I think my BMF is most accurate, I wear it all the time and is what I record here for my exercise. FS really over estimates calories burned so if you are calorie counting and using this as your guide just be aware of that and check a few different calculators on other sites to be sure you are capturing accurate exercise.
Just my little observation this morning. Have a blessed day everyone. ~Babs

Way to go. I'm determined to get in more exercise this week myself. Hope you have a great week and thanks for the info.

I've done similar experiments, although it seems way off, it's not quite as far off as you think. Keep in mind that you burn x calories just BEING, so you have to account for that. I took a look at a day where I didn't work out to get an idea of what I typically burn, & it was just over 100 calories an hour so I rounded down to 100. Say I burned 600 calories with 1 hour spent at the gym, I'd adjust it by 100 & figure only about 500 of those calories were really burned by working out. I do agree that you can't trust what exercise machines calculate, even if they trick you into giving them your weight.

I haven't been recording all my execise as I was before. I know roughly what I burn everyday. And my progress shows in body measurements and the scale. :) As long as I keep seeing results in those two, I'm pretty darn happy with it. But it is good to know that FS's exercise estimates is actually higher. I will keep that in mind about it.

I am not gonna get too worked up over it. Just trying to increase the exercise, keep the food clean and healthy. I do all my measurements monthly as well as rechecking BMI, Body Fat %, etc and keep an excel spreadsheet of it all. Kat, I know you do all that too. I think all of those results add up to being more important than a number on the scale.
