So I wanted to report on the Halloween experience this year.

First, only VERY MINOR sampling of the Halloween chocolate -- in total not equal to even one small piece. So that was a success in my book.

Secondly, we had good turnout with lots of really cute little kids. I love Halloween, seeing all the little kids, and giving out chocolates.

BUT... for the first time I noticed how many overweight kids there were. I know it's not a scientific survey, but there were way too many from what I could see. There was this one family -- 4 kids, all overweight except for the youngest who looked to be about 18 months -- and for the first time ever I actually felt guilty about giving out candy.

Usually after Halloween I take the leftovers to a local retirement center or nursing home, and keep a little for my kids and my office. This year I threw it all out. It feels odd to throw out "perfectly good" food, but I think no one needs this junk, and with the high level of obesity in our county that this stuff is like poison.

Except for very special occasions we've banned soda from our home, and try not to buy any food with high fructose corn syrup. And now we've junked the Halloween candy that we usually kept for a year.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks for your support!

Your observations about overweight children echos my husband's sentiments. He is a high school physical education-health education teacher. Childhood obesity is getting worse and worse. Yet what did I do -- like so many? I was guilty of handing out candy corn in my classroom last Thursday! The only solution I see is a nation wide high visibility campaign -- similar to what we just witnessed in October where EVERYTHING turned PINK to promote breast cancer awareness. The question remains: "What 'color' is childhood obesity?"

Correction - The word "echos" in the previous post should read "echo." My error!

Good for you for throwing it out... I too had planned to do the same, until I remembered how my hubbys co-workers thought it'd be funny to put a bunch of gold glitter in his hair at work, that I had to vacuum and vacuum and comb and vacuum out some more. Sooo.... needless to say, YES, I'll be sending to his work for THEM to enjoy. =D Paybacks.. yes, subtle, yet sufficient. =D Good for you on sparing yourself the snacking. I can't say the same. Keep on rockin' it up!

I think its great you threw it out! that takes real committment to being healthy! You are right that the kids don't need all that stuff, but when ImLuuvd was young and tric-or-treating her candy would last a long time (almost too long) but my youngest loved to go trick-or-treating but then forgot all about the candy part of it. It was put in a drawer and forgotten until I threw it out about 3 months later. Kids don't have to grow up eating sweets, candy and fast food, its a life style their parents seem to think they need. Too bad parents don't need to get a lisence before having children (like a driving lisc.) and you need to pass a test on proper care and feeding before having them :D
