DairyKing's Journal, 25 May 2013

It was a day of indulgence, or as Kingkeld would say, a "spike day." I did still manage to get my workout in tonight, so all was not lost. It wasn't as if this just snuck up on me; I knew yesterday that I was going to cook up pancakes, eggs and sausage, and I did. Then I made a steak sandwich for lunch, from the half of a New York strip that DW cut off hers last night. But, I had not expected to go to the local greasy spoon (really not that bad) with DW and DD for supper, and had what they call a skillet breakfast. They were really calling it a "Breakfast Horseshoe." 2 eggs over easy, over sausage gravy, over sausage patties, over hash browns, over toast. Quite tastey, and quite a load of calories from both carbs and protein. I enjoyed it in spite of the nagging feelings of guilt. It would just make it that much harder to take off the 1 1/2 to 2 pounds this week, but I was willing to take that chance. This life is a dance, and you have to be willing to pay the fiddler. And I am.

As much as we like watching the birds, I have come to realize that the more I feed them, the more will come. They seem to find all their friends and neighbors, and party at DK's house. So, I've switched strategies, and they get fed once a day. I put quite a bit out there, but if I feed them three times a day, they will empty the feeders three times a day. I can't believe there was a time when I was worried that none would show up or find the feeders.

Well, getting ready for my slumber party. Hope everyone has a wonamous weekend. Toodles!

I wonder if heroine junkies call their OD days SPIKE DAYS..... Ahh the dance! So, those birds told their friends, who told two friends, who said MORE SEEDS PLEASE! Amazing how they can communicatte to other birds, that there is a hot spot in your yard! Just make sure those coons don't hit that bird feeder! We caught one the other night in TN, then go release him accross the river! I like the once a day idea! Any hummingbird feeders? they will come all day long and don't empty the thing in an hour. Enjoy your slumber! and weekend:-) e

LOL.... Know what you mean about the birds... Greedy little things :-D. We find they are very 'seasonal'. They eat far more at this time of the year, because they are feeding their young, so use the feeders to supplement their food. When summer is in full swing and their little ones are grown up, they forage in the hedgerows and teach their young to do the same. We also get an increase when the weather is really bad - because they have a small "window of opportunity" because of rain or particularly snow, they use them more. I think, given the choice, they will forage, with a "top up" from the feeders. I used to have saucer shapes on the bottom of mine, so the seed didn't drop all over the floor. I have taken the off now, as the large doves, and wood pigeons would dominate the feeders, so the little birds didn't get so much of a look in. The larger birds still do ok, they get the seed that falls to the ground :-)

We have a huge trumpet vine running up the backstop for the baseball field. The hummingbirds love it. I actually had a neat experience with a hummingbird in the school here right after I first moved in. A hummingbird apparently got his wings all wrapped up in a spider web in the window and fell to the floor. I thought he was dead. I picked him up, peeled the web off of his wings and he flew away. It was kind of neat.
