Sandy701's Journal, 12 April 2013

Under the weather today, with a cold that crept up on me late Tuesday. Wednesday, I was OK enough to still work the thrift shop, but yesterday, well.....it was time for ALL the cold meds I typically take when this happens.

Note on today's foods....that big food mix of breakfast is actually split between breakfast and lunch.

I still walked yesterday, although maybe not quite at the usual pace. Today, however, I'm too sniffly and have too much of a cough to go out. Major bummer, as the storms of last night have given way to bright sunshine with temps in the low 70's....perfect for anything outside. My neighbor's out working in the yard (different neighbor...) and I'd love to go out there too. Heaven knows I've got a ton of work to do out there, but, again, just too sniffly to make it work.

Speaking of yardwork....Tuesday I saw a black snake inside the pool enclosure - YIKES!!! Luckily the dogs did not see it on their way out the door and so I let them back in through another way. I thought I knew what kind of snake it was but googled the info anyway....probably just a harmless black racer. I've seen one of them before, maybe 9 or 10 months ago on the side of the house. Still, I propped open the nearby door to the enclosure and watched it until it found its way out of the enclosure and into the yard.

Our pest control guy came out for a previously-scheduled visit the next day and reassured me that what I saw was probably what I thought....harmless and actually good to have around. Fine by me, but I'd rather not see any snakes. This is FL, after all, so I'm sure there ARE snakes here.....just don't need to see them. Hopefully, this will be my one sighting for the year. It IS spring and as the temps warm up, all the various creepy-crawlies come out. My pest guy actually went around the house, rummaging through and around the bushes to see if it was still around, but told me he didn't see it anywhere. Of course, I'm not naive enought to believe it CAN'T be out there, but I appreciated his efforts. He had a lot of snake stories for me that convinced me he's pretty knowledgeable and knows what he's doing around snakes.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather Sandy, spring colds are awful! Although the snake that was enjoying your pool area was probably harmless I can understand your reaction. I'm not afraid of snakes myself, and we're fortunate that all the snakes in our area are harmless (you have to go further north to find rattlers) but I'm deathly afraid of spiders. Snakes, frogs, toads, mice, etc. don't bother me at all, but I set eyes on a big spider and I'm OUTTA there!!! LOL! Hope you feel better soon!

Hey...sorry to hear you have a cold, major bummer those are, nothing smells, tastes of feels right until it is GONE. Same goes for your slithery yard guest...they are better in somebody elses yard, or at least have the common courtesy to stay out of sight! To Bren...I think I would have DIED ON THE SPOT if a snake fell on me! Instant heart attack! Sharks too, good thing I don't have to deal with those in Wisconsin. When I go to Florida for instance, I always say, "If I see 'em coming, I'll be dead of a heart attack before they can bite me!"

Bren, my gosh, how did you survive that???!!! I'd be sure to have had a heart attack and/or need to be committed somewhere!!! This particular kind, like most harmless ones, I guess, does a lot of good, taking care of any other vermin out there. But I'd still just rather not know about it or see it or.... Have a great weekend.

Well Carol, we've got spiders too. Luckily, mostly small ones outside. Actually that's what the pest control guys do mostly....keep all those things outside and under reasonable control. We've also got these small skinks/gecko things that just terrified me when I first saw them in SC. It's taken me YEARS to feel OK about them. They're harmless too and eat a lot of insects, so they're a good thing to have around. They can get into the enclosure in spring and fall too, but I can usually shoosh them outside with a broom. At least my blood pressure doesn't skyrocket when I see them anymore. Have a good evening.

GG, you're right about my taste being way off. I just couldn't find the right thing to eat last night. Ended up eating too much but at least it was all legal foods. Today, I think the cold meds are depressing my appetitie a bit, as I normally could have eaten all my egg concoction at one sitting this morning, but got to a point where I just didn't want any more. Gosh, that's when I KNOW I'm sick! Hope you can get some relaxation in this weekend, after the week you've had. Enjoy!

A snake in the pool makes my skin crawl. I went swimming at my neighbors once and there was a rat swimming in it. She helped it out with the skimmer and and we let it run away because neither of us had the guts to kill it. Now you take care of yourself and keep that cold at bay.

Legal is good...very good indeed, especially when you have a cold...Good Job! Hope you are feeling better today!!

Buffy, there have been a few "interesting" things caught in the pool, esp. when we had no enclosure on a previous pool. Here, however, it's much more tame with the enclosure. There've been a couple very small snakes I've taken out and killed, but overall, no big problem at all; maybe 1 or 2 a year. At least this somewhat larger one hadn't yet made it into the water, although sometimes it's easier to catch them if they ARE in the water (I've got a great big net!).

GG, it's taken a while, but at least I feel I can do regular, normal things now. Thanks for the good thoughts.
