Sandy701's Journal, 19 October 2012

Beautiful, blue-sky day with temp about 70. Will complete 4.8 miles walking today....2.6 with both doggies, 3.5 total with 1 doggy, and the rest by myself tonight.

100-Mile Challenge totals: Began Week 3 yesterday but with the rain, only put in a 1-mile walk in the evening. Week 3 total = 1 mile; challenge total = 53.2 miles.

Today's challenge update: 4.8 miles walked; week 3 total = 5.8 miles; challenge total = 58.0 miles

The rain yesterday put me behind on mileage, but that's exactly the reason I've tried to bank some extra tenths here and there. With some mileage in reserve, the mile I did put in yesterday, plus today's extra mileage, I'm actually only .3 miles or so behind as of the end of today. A bit extra tomorrow and I'll be right back on track to make the 100 miles by the end of the challenge.

Pumpkin chili turned out great! And....I tried a rutabaga for the first time and LOVE it!!!! Just wish it weren't so darn hard to cut up....that thing is like a rock! My grocery store coats it with this heavy wax, so that all had to get peeled off. But, by far, the hardest thing to do was cutting it up. No wonder it doesn't have widespread usage. But thanks to Buffy and GigiP(??) who recommended this potato substitute....I'd be hard-pressed to taste a difference.

Rutabaga is one of our favorite veggies but we don't have it often because it does take forever to "butcher" (term from DH). Glad you banked those extra miles - nothing like being prepared.

Bren, you've got to try one....IF it fits in with your dietary restrictions, that is. It tastes just like a potato with less calories and carbs, to boot, so it makes it a perfect food for my WOE....not sure about yours. I'm adding a rutabaga to my list of "things I never tried before, but like" list!

Buffy, I'll add to your DH's description....it takes forever to SLAUGHTER & butcher!! LOL!! I'm also glad I had some extra mileage in the bank, as being behind by 3-4 miles would have seemed like a HUGE deficit to make up when I'm already walking about as much as I can each day.

Whoo Hooo...lean walking MACHINE! Great job! Now, about those rutabaga things...I just tried them recently too & thought the same thing...where have you been all my life. Turnips weren't too bad either. I still have to think a bit to remember/figure out which is which.

I was wondering about the turnip hash browns someone made recently. Who was that? I would love to know how they turned out. I will try it if it's yummy. No I don't think I ever had rhutabaga. Glad to know it's this good. Well done on your walking. You just motivated me to get on the elliptical. Hugs!
