shiny50's Journal, 24 December 2018

So, at 50 years old, I find myself 100+ pounds overweight. I never had weight issues in my younger days. My problem was substance abuse which I finally overcame in 2014. I also left my husband of 23 years at that same time. I was in an emotionally abusive relationship and used drugs and alcohol to cope. The good news is today I am over 4 years sober. The bad news, I have turned to food for comfort and weighed in at 280 lbs. this morning. I am lethargic, use a cpap, have high blood pressure and recently began experiencing debilitating back pain. I no longer want to live like this and do not want my obesity to kill me. My name is Cindy and I am here for support
and guidance in my weight loss journey.

I am also 50 (well, 49.5!) and was feeling very lethargic and awful. I also use food as my comfort, which makes losing weight extremely difficult. When I’m mindlessly eating, all my worrries seem to melt away - except of course when I’m done binging and the shame sets in. Sounds like you have made some very positive changes in your life. Now to get control of your eating and start some activity. Walking is my go-to activity. Find something that you enjoy and can do every day - pretty soon you’ll want to do it. I think therapy is a must for food addicts - although I need to admit I haven’t pursued it yet. I desperately need to and would in a heartbeat if I had access to a good ED clinic. This is not going to be easy, but you deserve to be healthy and happy. It may seem impossible but you have made other changes (4 years sober!) that show you CAN DO IT! Keep posting here too, it helps.

With your back issue - could you swim? Just trying to think of activity that won’t be painful.

Hey Shiny! Keep Shining😇! Looks like you are fairly new here so I’m just welcoming you on your first post. Sex, Drugs, RocknRoll, and abuse can take its toll. Glad you are away from that situation and finding a new path! At 63 next month I’m telling myself too it may be time for more changes. One of them being less alcohol. This is a great supportive place with friendly folks and a wealth of knowledge! Easy does it on those knees getting started! Welcome!
