The nice thing about driving my daughter to work in the morning is it gives me time to think on the way home. I was realizing how the adjustments I have made in the last few days; keeping the net carbs below 20, and eliminating nuts from my diet, seem to be doing the trick. That is good news.

But, the sad news is, that this is not the first time I had to make this adjustment. About four weeks ago, I went through the same thing, with the same outcome. Why do we have to relearn the same lessons again and again?

My thought is that it has to do with bargaining. We all want to make bargains in this process. Okay, I had the dessert, but I am going to put in an extra workout later today, or I already did an extra hard workout; so it is all good. Or in my case, nuts are healthy. It is better than so many other foods I could be eating for a snack. I like them. I will record them. And I did. And that recording helped me spot (twice!) that when I add nuts back into my diet, I eat too many carbs. But I want to make the bargain that will make them work. So I tried again, and failed again.

The funny thing about most bargains, I suspect, is that we know full well that we are only kidding ourselves. I was able to get away with eating nuts for a few days. The weight loss slowed down, but I could easily fool myself into believing that it was just the normal way weight comes off...slowly. But, when the slow down becomes a stall, and finally, this last time, a creep in the wrong direction, it is time to re-evaluate the bargain.

I have tried to be more honest with myself this time. I am committed to improving my health. I regularly turn down food that used to sweetly call my name. I know the outcome is up to the choices I make. And, it turns out, the bargains I avoid.

I'll email some earplugs to you just in case sweetly calling your name turns into high-volume screeching. Good job in tracking what you eat and keeping an eye on the correlation.

I cannot use nuts either - they are too salty (even low sodium ones) and I just will eat too many - too much fat that doesn't justify the limited protein I would get from them.
