Are you setting yourself up for failure?

With so many doctrines as it comes to diet and what we should or should not eat, is it any wonder so many people fail? We all know the struggles overweight people face. But we are also social animals and seek approval from not just our peers but our families as well. When trying to lose weight, dealing with these relationships can prove to be a tough task. Many of us fail for that one simple reason. But is there a way to avoid it?

By now most people realize that in order to lose weight, we need to eat whole foods, as minimally processed as we can. So how do we balance our need for quality food and still be able to function in a social setting? For me the answer is to try and find replacement foods for those comfort foods I used to turn to. I am also fortunate that I don't have a filter when it comes to expressing myself. I don't really care what other people think. I am comfortable with who I am. That being said, there are others who are not. So how do you handle it?

I think this more than anything is the real heart of the problem when it comes to failure in weight loss. We are either afraid to speak up for fear of being singled out or we don't want to be the third wheel. But I think the best course of action for anyone in this situation is to be honest and express yourself. You do yourself a great disservice by not letting others know you are changing your life. It doesn't matter the reason and others should respect your decision. If they do not, then they were not worth your attention anyway.

If you truly wish to change, then it has to begin within yourself. No one can do it for you. You have to be honest with yourself. If you have demons that drive you to over eat, then you MUST confront them head-on if you ever wish for your changes to be long lasting. You have to get to a place where you are more important than anything else. I have seen marriages fall apart because one spouse was committed to changing their life, but their partner was not. You cannot be afraid or spend your time wondering what if. You have to commit to the change no matter what. Put yourself first. It is the only thing that will get you to that goal.

Being selfish in this regards is really the kindest thing you can do for others, if they value you being around for them.
