Gaining Muscle while on Calorie Deficit
I can speak from a place called experience. I am currently in a Federal study being funded by the National Council on Aging. It is a calorie restricted "diet" - CALARIE II Study (I will not bore you with the details here - there's a good article about it in the New York Times, Oct 2009.) At baseline on Dec. 3, I had Body Fat percentage of 17.9%; June 25 I went in for the 6 month testing and was told I have a Body Fat percentage of 6%. I lost 12 kg of fat while losing only 2 kg of lean muscle. I exercised, on average 1 hour 5 days per week, including weight training and running. I ate a low fat, high protein diet. Whole wheat and grains, white meats and fish, vegtables and fruits. Very little sugar; liquids limited to water, skim milk, light beer and a glass of red wine occasionally. My desert is nonfat vanilla yogurt, fresh fruits and granola, almost daily. I consume 2,300 calories each day or least that's my target. Weigh daily and record it. Be consistent and watch the pounds of fat melt away and depending on your lean muscle composition at start time, you will either lose very little muscle mass or gain a little muscle mass. You will definitely moult.
