Sorry it's been so long since I posted a journal entry. Things have been quite crazy here.

I totaled my Toyota Prius July 6th. It rolled over 4 times and I am very lucky to be alive. It landed on its wheels or I wouldn't be. Brakes failed in a hairpin turn coming off the expressway. But I was very fortunate - no broken bones or major injuries , I did have my seat belt on, thank goodness.

Then the next week I broke a bone in my left foot. What a klutz.

Then the next week I had spinal fusion surgery. I am batting 3 for 3 so far, but am recovering nicely from the surgery.

I have found out I am lactose intolerant - just found this out before my surgery, but forgot to tell them I have been on a low sodium diet prior to the surgery. It took me a week to take off the water weight gain from the salt that was in the hospital food - yikes.

Anyway, haven't been able to exercise much, but it seems my low sodium diet is still working well, as I have continued to lose weight even though I can't exercise much.

i am sticking to about 1200 mg of sodium a day or less and a diabetic diet (since I am type II) My diabetes in well under control.

Now I am also trying to quite the cancer sticks, but as my friend Ox Drover says "There is no try, there is only do." So I am doing it, and I know it will help my back surgery recovery tremendously plus my pocket book.

Advice to those out there who are trying to lose weight, a lot or a little - don't give up. It takes perserverance, exercise (even if all you can do is walk every day or ride a bike), and a little will power.

But one thing i have learned (as I have been over weight all of my life), if you are having a terrible craving - like for chocolate - it is better to eat 8 or 9 hershey's kisses and quench that craving, then give the rest of the bag away, than to try to fight it and go crazy when the craving gets to be too much and have 2 or three candy bars or more. eight or 9 hershey's kisses are only 140 or so calories 3 or 4 candy bars are over 1000 calories - which is worse?

Take care all.

I am going to start a low sodium, lower calorie, higher protein, low starchy carb, more complex carbohydrates diet. I am limiting myself to 1200-1500 calories a day. I am going to try to stick with water to drink and limit myself to only one can of diet soda a day, if I drink soda at all. I do take a dark chocolate supplement called Xocai chocolate which I will continue to take, but I will try to make that the only chocolate I consume (which will be hard for me since I am a chocoholic by nature).

Since my husband is a class 4 heart patient, I have opted to do the low sodium with him. I have learned quite a bit about low sodium cooking and low sodium foods, which I hope can help others who are searching for help in this area. I have an upcoming website I hope to build that will have links to sites where you can get no salt herbs, herb blends, chips, taco shells, and condiments, that those of us in rural America can't find in abundance, since our grocers do not stock them like they do in the bigger cities. If you are interested, you can email me off site and when the website is ready, I will send you the website address, as we are not supposed to advertise here. There are good recipe books on the low sodium subjects, as well as good websites to go to besides the American Heart Association, that can give you more information about people that sell good worthwhile products for food sources that are easier to buy than make if you work and don't have the time to sit around and make taco shells and chips that taste halfway decent.

My husband was a salty, crunchy eater before he got terribly ill. When they took away his chips and salsa and hot sauces and his fluids, I actually thought he was going to take his own life. He used to be a fantastic oriental cook (Peking Duck, Pot stickers, REAL Sweet and sour pork - not the kind you get in America), now he is slowly learning to cook without the high sodium normally found in oriental cooking, but it has taken him over a year to adjust and not be so despondent.

Anyway, I weighed at the Doctor's office Tuesday and weighed 184 #, today I weighed 181.75 #. Both scales are the doctor's balance scales and are within 1/4 of a pound of each other (I know because I have checked them against each other prior to this week). We had to get this kind of a scale for home because of my husband's condition. Before my husband became ill, my weight was 198, so don't let anyone tell you a low sodium diet doesn't work.

I am also going to start using the Tower of Power I bought a while back; however, I do have a pinched sciatic nerve in my back, so I have to deal with that first before I begin a rigorous exercise program.

I am also diabetic Type 2, and as my friend Oxdrover will tell you, sometimes I forget to eat (oops), not good, I know. And to make matters worse, I am an RN also. I know - do what I say not what I do does not work. So I am trying to rectify that situation.

My fasting BS this morning was 99 (it is usually between 90-99, rarely reaches 100+), I had a EAS protein drink because I have been on the go, and now I am having a Granny Smith apple.

I am new to all of this, so bear with me as I slug through all the new stuff.
