Weight training
I 2nd getting a personal trainer for a couple sessions to show you the ropes, good form, etc. It get you comfortable there more quickly. I don't like machines, because they inhibit natural movement, but if you use them make sure you know how to adjust them properly. Don't be afraid to push yourself a bit, you'll be surprised how quickly you'll get stronger.

Most people in the weights area are friendly, just be polite, clean up after yourself, don't interupt a persons set, and don't camp out on high demand equipment. You'll be a pro in no time!
