Sugar free energy drinks yes, ones with sugar will provide additional energy but your body will be using those calories to fuel your workout instead of the fat you wanted to burn. The best thing to do is consume a moderate protein (15-20g) of protein, no fat, and low carb snack about an hour before you workout, and then some sugar free gatorade and 5g of branch-chained-amino-acids (BCAA's) about 20 minutes prior to working out. Follow the workout with the 2:1 carbRazzrotein drink and some 5g more of BCAA's.

what do you eat after a workout?

Mostly be sure to drink enough, but not too quickly. As for eating, it depends what time you're working out. If you feel light-headed from low blood sugar and have a long way to go to the next meal, sure have some fruits or something, but normally your body can and should cope and regulate your blood sugar until the next meal.

Proteins are good to help your muscles recover and grow, but there's no need to have them straight after working out. Avoid sweets at all costs, they will send your blood sugar spiking back up and you'll loose most of the benefit from your workout.

Sore muscles happen mostly the first week or 2 of working out. If you keep at it regularly soon it won't be a problem. Just stretch properly before and after.
You need to do some research! Avoid sweets after working out YES if it is soda or candy or brownies, but the body uses much needed glycogen when doing any type of aerobic or anerobic exercise, and the only way to replenish that is to spike your insulin up and force the body to begin making more glycogen stores. Your muscles are sore because they're not used to the resistance AND you're not re-fueling them properly after putting them through the workout itself. Think of it as a car driving 3k miles and you not changing the oil....eventually it is going to run out and blow up. Well you muscles need fuel and muscle glycogen isn't easily made in the body without the proper nutrients post-workout. It is common knowledge for those who do weight training regularly that a 2:1 ratio of carbs is needed after working out. I usually do 50g of simple carbs in the form of dextrose or maltodextrin powder with a scoop of protein mixed with water. For the two people that said they eat a flax muffin or nuts....NONONO! Your body is rushing anything and everything it can from the food you eat post workout back to your body...if you're ingesting fat...guess where it goes? Not to mention that anything fatty or fiberous will slow the digestion down and be counter-productive in the long run.

Mayonnaise
Last time I checked, Hellmans mayo is simply FAT and does not contain any EFA's. The amount of healthy fats you're getting from a serving of SmartBalance mayo far outweighs the impact of a couple carbs or the unhealthy fats consumed in regular mayo. 2g of carbs is burned off blowing a kiss or frowning!

Breakfast?!!!
Adr58 wrote:
I actually find I get more hungry during the day if I eat breakfast. My usual routine sets me up so that when I'm done with my exercising and morning routine, lunch is the first meal. If I have anything for breakfast, it's a couple eggs, for the protein, after exercising, assuming I have exercised earlier in the day. And I prefer drinking hot tea with milk.

You feel more hungry after eating breakfast because your body has starved all night while sleeping, and when you do eat breakfast it kick-starts your metabolism (fatburning) and quickly rushes those nutrients to your body. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and by avoiding it you cause your body to eat away at muscle since it is a more efficient source of energy. Always eat breakfast, and for those who say they can't handle a large breakfast should invest in some high quality whey protein shakes to drink. Not eating in the morning and waiting until noon will only hinder your weightloss!
