Herbie's Journal, 23 July 2007

After a week or so at the same weight, I'm down another pound. Yay! I'm glad to see some progress. After almost three months of this diet it seems more like a lifestyle now.

Last night my husband and I went on a date (much to the woe of my two young kids --why would we ever want to do something without them??). We went to see the new Harry Potter movie and the theater gave us coupons for free popcorn and soda. I have never liked diet soda, I can't stand the aspertame taste. But I used to be a major popcorn hound. When I was a kid my dad would take us to the movies and we'd get the biggest tub of popcorn --with extra butter, of course-- and a giant coke to share. We'd usually finish it and feel gorged after the movie. Last night I did go ahead and get a free popcorn (no extra butter) and had water to drink. I only had about three handfuls of popcorn before I didn't really want any more, so I just set it aside and ignored it for the rest of the movie.

So, feeling good about making some progress again. We move in a week and a half, at which point I'll cut myself a little slack on the diet. I hope to get down by another pound or so by then.

You are doing so good. I am jealous of your progress but I will get there. Good luck with the move and don't worry about eating super healthy, just try to be as healthy as possible.

Your progress is amazing, and the "outcome" of weight is only one part of that progress. The most important shift is probably in habits and how you feel about those habits. As you say, your dietary change feels less like a diet and more like a new lifestyle. Perhaps during your vacation you can emphasize building in fun exercise. You know, long walks on the beach, drinking pina coladas, and getting lost in the rain.

I find the movie popcorn very difficult to resist, too. I think it's good if you can limit yourself to 2-3 handfuls. I find waster is an easy substitute for coke. Hope you liked the movie. We're big Harry Potter fans at our house.
