Visit with doctor yesterday went great. He was so proud of me for taking the initiative to begin low carb (sub 20g net carb) eating plan without waiting a whole month to see him again, and he was even more thrilled to see that I lost 5 pounds in the month since I last saw him, an average of 1.25 pounds per week, as calculated by my weekly weighings.

He agreed based on my fasting blood sugars of 109-117 that I should be on Metformin for at least a month to see if it makes a difference. As an insulin resistant pre-diabetic, it's crucial to reduce my blood sugar one way or another to prevent becoming a full blown diabetic. Since I have eliminated all but 20g of carbs from my diet, there is no more that I can do myself. I'm pleased with this decision.

I will continue to take my blood sugar readings regularly to see how soon (if at all) a difference occurs. The pharmacist said it could be as soon as 3 days or as long as 10.

My doctor also confirmed yesterday that because of several other conditions I have, that I also have something called Metabolic Syndrome, a whole 'nother thing I must now read up on and become and expert on. Sigh. Something new to read and research in my "copious" spare time. LOL. He also said I could have a fatty liver, which is another Bad Thing. I need to look into that, too. They are running blood on that today.

I'm not usually one to wallow in regret, and I'm not admitting that I'm doing so now, but I'm teetering on regretting not having done something about my health sooner. Since I can't go back, I can only be glad that I did something a year ago when I did!

I just bing'd metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance syndrome is another name. It's the same thing as prediabetes but diagnosed differently. Apparently you "have" it if you have multiple problems (weight, sugar, high BP, etc). So not another thing, just a name for 3 or more items on the list. Take stuff off and voila no more syndrome.

Glad that you and your doctor are putting together a plan. My AST and ALT dropped, but I too, still have a "fatty liver." Got to keep going, the pounds has to come off for sure. Don't worry, you will do great as you already proven that with the weight you have already previously loss. You are a true winner.

What I read so far is that metabolic syndrome is insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. But I have yet to read more. It's exciting to learn stuff about my walking chemistry set! LOL!

When looking back our vision is 20/20. All we can do is go forward and do everything we can to even out the playing field and you have done a great job of that so far. Stay true...
