59Carol's Journal, 30 January 2021

I am logging in a gain of exactly what I lost last week. I am disappointed but not surprised - there were two East Indian meals and most insidious of all I bought some Young Coconut slices which are amazing and I am not eating them in moderation. In some ways I am glad that I haven't gained more! It is the end of the month and the good news for me is that I have lost a total of 3.8 pounds despite this morning's gain.

I put the dried dates in a less accessible place and that has worked well. I will need to do the same with the coconut this morning. I do find that making it less convenient to eat certain calorie dense foods is a passive way of controlling my intake.

I may be about a week from having my basement renovations completed! To my pleasure I have finally been successful in attaching a picture to this entry. These are my basement steps. What you aren't seeing are the beat-up rough wood that was heavily painted in a Crayola purple. Heavily painted to fill in the gouges and dents! You can see a little of the purple where we will be finishing the trim next week. Now these have oak planking on top - oak I have had sitting here for literally decades! The vertical faces are a blue subway style tile that is the same as my kitchen backsplash. The barnboard that you can see are the boards I took off my old well house last summer. The wood piece on the white tile separates the heated floor from the non-heated floor. The heated floor is slightly higher due to the heating wires so we needed a transition. This transition was in my garage from a different project my husband had been working on. The floor tile is tiled right over the cement that was there.

Beautiful, just beautiful! It's so fun to be able to see the pictures from all you've been explaining. So happy for you to be able to make these improvements. It's been a long haul for you, but satisfying. There are many things that need to be done in my house. My husband was in construction and the shoe maker's children often go without shoes. My house had more damage than it was worth during the Northridge earthquake but it's home, and I'm very glad to have it: cracks, buckled floors and all. I'll never be able to fix it all, but it's still comfortable. I'm thanking the Lord for it. Aren't you glad to have a home when you think about all the people that feel uncertain about their apartments or may lose their home?

I am absolutely glad that I have a home that is mine. I do know that I am fortunate however my husband and I delayed gratification and saved our money to ensure that we would be in this position at this time of our life. I am glad we were frugal and careful with our money. My husband was in a terrible car accident at age 30 and was unable to work from that time on. So we survived on the money I made and raised two kids plus my sister after my folks died. All three kids have a university degree and came out of school debt free. We told them that their debt free educations were their inheritances!

Putting hi calorie, tempting food in a place I don't readily notice helps me as well! Your stairs are looking beautiful, and how the pieces have come together is so wonderful! I'm glad you could post a photo! I'm looking forward to seeing more!!!

Thank you Melissa! I am pleased with the progress on my renovations. The stairs turned out better than expected. Since that picture was done they have been grouted and sealed. Trim is next! High calorie food, even healthy food such as nuts, can really get out of hand when they are easily accessible.

Thank you Tom, Shirfleur and Davidsprincess! I am getting so very excited. I am seeing changes everyday. The fellows thought they would be done by today but they were too optimistic. I think this time next week I should be 'moving' into the space. I will try to get more pictures up - I seem to have a hard time getting them to post.
