Jetsah's Journal, 16 June 2018

I have been using another app/website to track my food because I find that one to be simpler and more straightforward than FS. But I still like that I get to do journal entries here, so I'll switch between the two.

I think I'll try to weigh myself every morning to learn how my habits from the day before affect my weight. Ultimately, I don't care too much about my actual weight it's my BF% I'm interested in. But since I will have to be out of the gym for a full month I might as well track something.

I don't find the keto diet as hard as I thought it would be in terms of what to eat. What's difficult for me is that many 'ketoers' out there don't track calories and can indulge in fat bombs and eat bacon all day, which are LOADED with calories. At 4'11" and my current weight, I'm scared to death of not tracking my calories. It has been my experience in the past (pre keto) that a calorie surplus for me equals weight gain, even when I'm actively training. I can't risk that now that I'm about to stop training completely. I've already lost 6lbs and it's only my first week on keto so I might be able to play around and find a happy spot. But I'll take it slow while I learn more about my body and this lifestyle.

Cheers!
118.2 lb Lost so far: 3.8 lb.    Still to go: 3.2 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Diet Calendar Entry for 16 June 2018:
1333 kcal Activities & Exercise: Fitbit - 24 hours. more...
losing 5.9 lb a week

the high fat content and high protein helps keep people more full. Fiber and water from vegetables contribute to that as well. Majority of the time, those reasons help stave hunger, not going to eat if you’re full/not hungry, the drastic reduction or limitation completely of carbohydrates contributes to a much lower caloric intake. Add those 3 things up, & that’s why majority of folks don’t need to worry about counting calories, it’s low enough & they’re full enough to not eat anymore, makes it simple. & for most people, the usual amount of calories will be low enough to cause weight loss. But as you said, if you eat too much fat, and/or too little protein, then one can go into either less of a deficit overall, or maintain weight, maybe into a surplus but, with the low cals already & higher thermic effect of protein contributing to more calories expended, that’s not very likely. It’s possible, but, most of the time not something that’ll happen often. So if it helps you to count calories, so be it, if not, then don’t. Whatever you choose to do, as long as you’re progressing fine towards your goal and are happy and healthy that’s all that matters.

Thank you @DEADPOOL12345! One of the things I love most about this is that the majority of people seem to understand that it's not a one-size-fits-all type of thing, and everyone approaches it in whatever way works best for them as long as they follow the fundamental rules. It's nice not being criticized or bullied because of it.

Nice work and smart approach. Those who thrive on keto without counting are often obese, or started that way. Totally different ball game for trained lean individuals.

what's the other app?

I have to document my intake, it helps me try to keep a good balance on my fat to protein ratio and keep track of my calories. I too can not get away with higher calories for my slower metabolism and lack of muscle tone. I also use another site to try and get more accurate daily totals as some of each site can be a bit off track.

@KFITE1 the app is Carb Manager. I like it because it's focus is net carbs vs total carbs.

I do keto and I watch my calories. If I go over regardless of my macros for the day I freak out.

Jetsah you can add net carbs to the fatsecret daily list too.

I’m right there with ya! Still striving to keep my cals low on Keto, I track Everything and count whole carbs so I don’t lose control. Once I’m physically able to “train” and burn a Lot of calories, I’ll increase my intake but until then, I’m staying under 1300

i just started the keto diet and I am so worried about how it actually works, I am 5'1 and seriously dont need to gain no weight. any advice?

I am definitely feeling less hungry as the days go by, so my body is definitely adapting. I'm trying to figure out if the couple pounds I put on these last few days are due to going over my calories a little or water retention, which I've read is normal since I'm probably consuming a lot more sodium than before.

@MomaCan before starting I spent a LOT of time researching. I read about how keto works, the different ways to do it, used a bunch of different calculators to calculate my macros and make sure I was choosing a good range for my body type, I looked at many keto friendly recipes and made my meal plan with the help of a food tracker to know exactly how much of what I was putting in my body. Then it was time to go shopping! There are many many keto blogs out there with lots of great recipes and advice. While I found that a lot of the recipes were too calorie dense for me, at least they served as inspiration and I was able to make the necessary tweaks and end up with something that works for me. Give yourself enough time to learn about it and what works for you. You're small like me, so definitely keep an eye on your calories, unless you're fairly overweight in which case it's a different story.
