My husband is recovering from the gastric sleeve, and has started eating solid foods again - however, they have to be SOFT! We tried some chicken strips last Friday, and that didn't work out so well. Scrambled eggs seem to work okay, but he's still having a bit of trouble with portions. Right now he can only eat about 1/2 cup at a time, and it can take time for him to finish that much. Yesterday he said it was very strange that I was finishing dinner before he was, since in the past it was always the other way around. I used to say he didn't eat food, he inhaled it. Not anymore, he's really slowed down. Health-wise his BP and blood sugar are GREAT! He's been off the insulin pump for about a month, and has lost over 40 lbs! (happy dance!!!) He's even gone a couple of nights without the apnea machine - if he can get off of that as well this surgery would be totally worth it! He had to buy some new clothes yesterday, so sad (NOT!). Still, the gastric sleeve does have a failure rate. My sister said a friend of her husband got it done, but he never "felt full" and just kept on eating. Didn't work for him. I told my hubby about that, and reminded him he needed to change all of his eating habits permanently. But he may actually not be getting enough carbs - he usually has around 60 a day, and sometimes is tired or light-headed. I think Friday he had a few more, and felt much better. That's a number we'll need to keep an eye on.
