DairyKing's Journal, 17 January 2012

Up at 4:00 AM., barely enough time to get everything done and get to work on time. Ran 4.3 miles Sunday morning, and 2.8 miles this morning. Didn't feel like getting up and running, but did it anyway. Once I get going, it actually feels good. I can really tell the benefits. My heart rate is lower now after running 4 miles than it was after 0.5 miles a couple of months ago, and it drops about 30 beats in a minute, after I quit exercising. That's not to say my body doesn't ache and feel like it was hit by a truck afterwards some days, but that just goes with the aging process. Got to keep moving or the parts rust up. Jillian has me putting in about 15 miles per week right now on this half-marathon training program. At the end of it, I'll have to put in almost that many miles in a day. We'll see if that happens. I've come a long way since August 1st, but I'll follow this program until my body says it's enough, and I'll be content to maintain at that level. Maybe.

It was about 50F yesterday, with snow turning to slush. Supposed to have a high of about 26 today and go down to about 9F tonight. What crazy weather! I really can't complain about it though, considering this is typically the coldest month of the year, and we have had some winters with horrific ice storms and prolonged sub-zero temps at this time of year previously.

Should women have children after 35? No, 35 chldren are enough!

Erika, these Jillian Michaels training programs are at iFit.com. They have 5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon, Full Marathon, and Performance Training at all levels. I have one of those treadmills that log onto the internet and downloads the next workout after you complete the previous one. It is a subscription service, but I got a free year with the purchase of this treadmill. They also have the ability to download onto a jump drive so you can get the workout and downloaded on your treadmill without having wireless internet at home. There is also similar programs at runnersworld.com that you pay for. And there is a boatload of free ones out there on the web as well. This is just convenient for me because it automatically keeps track of my mileage and varies the speed and intensity to get me to the goal in the quickest time - hopefully without injury. - I'm doing most of my running on the treadmill now because my outside runs don't get counted on this treadmill program. To keep from overdoing it, I have to delete workouts from the treadmill program on the days that I run outside, or I would be forever falling behind. I get kind of spoiled on this thing, because it gives me steeper hills that I can't get in the area I'm in.

That sounds like a great program. What type of treadmill did you buy? What are the pros and cons of it. I have looked into buying one before but didn't have enough room for one. Can't believe how quickly you have turned into a running machine.

How cool! I have a half marathon schedule that I have adjusted slightly from the internet, but it just gives me suggested mileage/training for each day. I also have one for my Nike+ sensor that will track my mileage/speed/etc., but it doesn't control the treadmill, so I have to manually adjust my speed/incline.. I guess I should just set my treadmill to do a gradual hill workout so I don't just run with no incline - that will suck to try to adjust to outdoor/hill running again!!

Hi M. I searched the internet for the best deal I could find, and found the NordicTrack Commercial 1750; here's a link: http://www.nordictrack.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_-1_10301_12401_59002_167853 Even though I bought it over the internet, I see it cost a lot more now; I think I paid about a $1000.00 less than what this is showing. It also says it's out of stock, so it won't have a sales price on it. It may have been replaced with a newer model. I went back and forth between it and the Sole F85 which also had great reviews, and seemed pretty similar, except it didn't have the iFit Live compatibility: http://www.soletreadmills.com/Folding-Treadmills/F85-Folding-Treadmill. - Here's a list of iFit Live Compatible Treadmills: http://www.treadmill-ratings-reviews.com/ifit-treadmills.html

I'll post the link for iFit live compatible treadmills on the Group forum. I forgot the journal truncates web addresses.

I think one of the coolest features is the ability to map anywhere in the world that has been google-mapped, and then see the same scenery that you would see if your were actually running there. So, you could run in Paris today, and the Boston Marathon tomorrow. I haven't tried to run anything that has been google-mapped yet though. I mapped a few places just to see if it worked, but I've already got plenty of runs scheduled. It's just amazing how the internet has changed the way we do things, even simple things like running on a treadmill or eliptical trainer.

Thank You DKing. That was the ballpark price I had seen on the good sales too. Not sure when that will be doable for me but at least the weather will start warming up soon so I can run outside. I'm a wimp when it comes to running in the cold :(
