Fledgist's Journal, 16 November 2011

Off travelling today. I'll be in Beantown for a conference for the next few days. One benefit of a professional conference in Boston is that I get to see my older son. He's in graduate school at U Mass Amherst, two hours drive away. Last November we drove up from the Northeastern Political Science Association conference to see him, his girlfriend, not to mention their cat, and their gecko. This time, he's driving down.

This time, I'm presenting a paper at the Social Science History Association. It's the first time I've presented a paper at an association of historians, rather than at one of either political scientists or Caribbeanists. I'm finding it a bit scary. I'm not a historian, even though my approach is historical, and what I'm interested in is how certain ideas got transformed into political practice. Still, I've seen literary scholars turn up at political science conferences (MaryLu Hill of Villanova University presented on Thomas Carlyle some years back at the Southern Political Science Association -- with me as the only person in the audience who had read Carlyle; he's not exactly a popular subject, the Thomas Carlyle Resartus Conference which MaryLu organised a few years ago attracted a total of fifty scholars from all over the world).

Has your son seen you since you've lost so much weight? If not, won't he be pleasantly surprised! I got a kick out of seeing my daughter after a few weeks had gone by post-diet and she called me "small." First time I'd been described that way and it tickled me. Hope you have a great trip. Don't let those historians intimidate you!

OH, safe travels!!! Hope you get a chance to enjoy beantown! Perhaps a yummy trip to the North End??? (be careful :) (don't overdo the yummy trip to the North End!) I agree... just be yourself, you'll do fantastic! And so glad your son can come into the city and meet you! Have fun - even while you work!

Haven't been by your journal in a while, apologies for neglecting you! Hope your conference goes well. Your weight is going very well, and congrants on not giving in to the treats the other day. Imagine you are almost the same weight as your favorite ex. Hope to see you on next week sometime, and that your trip was a success and that you got to see your son, I know how much your children mean to you and that you don't see them near as much as you would like. Wow, 179 lb, that's just remarkable.
