madaboutmoose's Journal, 16 October 2011

Sunday morning. 207. Up again. I think this is 4 days in a row now ... I'm not certain, I'd have to run downstairs to check or check my recent journals which I can't do while I am writing. LOL!!!

So. What do I think about that? What do I do, if anything? What are my options? One of my buddies posted something about Leptin ... a physician by the name of Dr. Jack Krusewho advocates the use of a paleo diet to reset the hormonal balance in your body to be able to lose weight and gain health and wellness overall. He is a neurologist and there is a ton of information on his webpage ... much of which sort of goes over my head!!

Some of what he says flies in the face of what I have thought to be "true" for a long time. For instance, eat breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up. DO NOT EXERCISE during the period of time you are resetting your metabolism. His theory is that if you are overweight you are Leptin resistant. You need to reset your metabolism to gain Leptin sensitivity. He recommends a BIG breakfast, no snacking between meals and keeping carbs I think under 50 for 6-8 weeks to reset Leptin sensitivity.

I'm curious if anyone has read his information and if so what you think about it. I know Stef follows The Primal Blueprint (at least I think she does) and squigglywiggly has recently begun to experiment with Dr. Kruse's approach (that's where I discovered the initial link to his info). Anyone else?

No exercise for 6-8 weeks??? Really? Holy crap. Yet, I'm a little freaked out that the scale has crept up 2 lbs over the course of several days ... even though I am following Dukan's recommendations. Actually ... I'm just freaked out in general. I'm not sure Dukan's recommendations are much different that Dr. Kruse's ... there are similarities ... but perhaps with different explanations.

I'm not rushing into anything ... if I decide to give this a whirl I will do so AFTER my trip to my girlfriend's at the end of this week. If I want to attempt to "reset" my Leptin sensitivity I want to commit to a full 6-8 weeks as Dr. Kruse describes ... give it my best shot. Not short changed myself.

Anyway ... I'm not sure what to think about this ... could use input.

My hands have been bothering me. My rings are tight, my wrists hurt, and several times last night I woke up with my hands pretty much completely numb.

Nothing much on the agenda today .... some household chores, budget, not sure what else. Frost again this morning. We've some challenging issues that have presented themselves to us. Focused on taking our time responding, being mindful, not rushing into decisions. That is difficult at times.

I am grateful today for ...

1. the bright blue sky outside
2. access to the internet
3. the ability to think, slow myself down, take my time
4. water!!!
5. hubby's stir fry abilities

Speaking of water ... I'm thirsty!! Off to be productive this Sunday ... ever mindful of the need for me to be kind to myself. Looking forward to hearing input from folks about this Leptin resistance/sensitivity theory. Have a wonderful Sunday!!

I read the info, after seeing your comment on Squigglywiggly's journal. In Rob Wolf's book (the Paleo Solution) there is also some info about leptin. All of this bring us back to a paleolitic way of eating, 2 or 3 big meals a day, no starch, no dairy. I find it very true and it definitely worked for me. One thing though, you don't stop exercising during the 6 to 8 weeks, but you go with light exercise (this is my understanding after reading te comments on the bottom of the page). Mark Sisson also says that intense exercise everyday is unnecessary. Imagine what a cave man would do on a daily basis: Walking, then once a week he would go hunting (sprint, run, elliptical) and he would lift heavy weight when he catch his food (kettlebell, free weight). I think if you go for this experience that's a good start for exercise. This is of course only my opinion and you should have a look on Mark's daily apple, or other paleo sites. Have a great Sunday Carol!

Thanks Anne. As always I value your input. I have Mark's Daily Apple up ... am trying to take it all in ... slightly overwhelmed but sure would like to see progress. Back to work!!

My input? If you have health insurance go and get a check up, some blood work. You have mentioned your hands feeling numb before. Could just be water retention but you best be sure. I don't have any input into the primal/paleo lifestyle. They are all low carb really and I think just cutting out the sugar and white stuff is a good place to start. Hoping you feel better. Stef is under the weather as well right now.

Izzy, thanks. I do get regular check-ups. My blood work is always good. I think my annual comes in the Spring. I think I have carpel tunnel ... years ago I packaged boxes for Coldwater Creek ... ever since then it flares up now and again. I'm okay ... my head is just swimming and I need to settle myself down. LOL!!

I am so confused!! Seriously it's beyond ridiculous. i am trying to decide where to start and everyone's an expert. I began with south beach- lots of whole grain- I've been gluten free/dairy free and I have done well but added in too many brown rice things probably- and fruit...I am looking at ultra simple- protein/ veggies/ shakes. I am looking at paleo- meats and veggies few fruits- I am looking at 17 day diet- with meats veggies fruits few grains....I have devoted more than a few hours to looking at reviews of everything and I have no decision. Each dr thinks their plan is the right good healthy one- then I have several buddies who lost most of their weightr by dropping meats and proteins doing whole grains fruit and veggies. I feel totally overwhelmed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh I so hear you Sharon!!! I know. I'm not sure I'm going to be much help. k8yk lost hers being vegetarian ... and now she is vegan most of the time!!! Densible ... well she's been doing the Dukan thing and has done quite well. Cynthia? Sounds to me like she ate whatever she wanted ... just less of it!! So ... it comes down to what fits best with your life. What kinds of food do you feel "best" on? What do you think will be easiest to work into your busy, mama of six - wife of one, lifestyle? Are you hungrier with or without protein? Does gluten seem to trouble you or not? Whatever you do you will lose weight. There is no "magic" diet ... just different ways of eating. Hang in there ... we will figure this out.

Girls, that only means one thing: as long as you eat less than you burn, but not too little, you will lose the weight. Vegan, vegetarian, paleo, southbeach, any diet works because it allows to keep calories measured and below the calories consumed. What makes a diet a success is how you feel with it, if you can keep doing it for a life time and not like a "diet". The first thing is to calculate how many calories you need to eat and know what kind of food triggers cravings or make you sick. After that, any plan you choose will work!

For me it was confirming my long held instinct that simple carbs, gluten and sugar are my worst enemies. I had never really put it to the test in a consistent way. I have spent most of my adult life (30 years, at least), struggling with this issue. When I finally committed to it using the Dukan as my guide, I saw results. It was very low calorie too but I have eaten low calorie for most of last 3 years and was hopelessly stalled. I agree, we all must find our own unique woe. Moose-you were getting results with low carb/high protein. I know you have seen a bit of a reversal in last few days. My first thought is to stick with it a little longer. Maybe eliminate dairy as well for a bit and reintroduce veggies? Sounds like you are experiencing inflammation and water retention. Asparagus and Artichokes are my go to diuretic foods. My two cents. I am so happy to be back!

Lots of interesting information here. I am not good with any of it. I followed SB when I started. I don't know that it was really SB that helped me lose the weight or just calories in calories out which is what I try to do now tempered with some exercise. It's really what works the best for me. I haven't really followed anything for a couple years now. I did find when I started that having a plan to follow gave me the dicipline I needed. Sorry Carol...Im no help at all. Have a great Monday.
