Ryojiin's Journal, 19 April 2016

Been over-eating a lot lately, according to my calorie cap. But really, it's the ONLY meal I've been getting for the last week. This new job is great for calories burned, honestly, and I'm sure I'm burning more than I'm able to record, but still, it's been brutal.

Standing for 8-10 hours a day on a kitchen line, with absolutely no breaks ever, no lunch times ever, and an absolutely slammed "lunch"time-rush for 5-6 of those 8-10 hours is intense. I've managed to eat a Cliff Bar the last few mornings before I clock in, but there's no way I'd ever get a lunch break or a break at all all shift. It's crazy how busy we've been, and we've only been open a week!

The scale says I'm gaining, like gaining a lot and fast, but I'm really hoping it's just water retention from post-menstrual and being dehydrated, standing on the line on the receiving end of the oven, furthest away from the kitchen's AC, will dry you out fast. And I really don't even have time to drink water most of the time.

I have managed to avoid the soda fountain, though, so that's good for me. I'll bring in a tea to caffeinate me in the morning, always black meaning no cream/milk or sugar or anything, and a reusable water cup that I can refill endlessly. I don't feel like I've gained weight, and I don't think I look it, so it probably is just water weight, and probably some food weight, too. I don't get to eat until 4-6pm every evening, then weigh in the following morning and I feel like it's skewed. I'll also charge the batteries in it and see if that helps.

Pretty much, yeah. I know it shouldn't be the only thing I count or rely on for progress, but it is frustrating to see it go up when I expect it to be going down.

Oh I feel ya! Are you taking measurements too? My scale wasn't budging much (even though my clothes were looser) for forever and I was getting wicked frustrated. I was also being stubborn. I had planned to measure once a month, but skipped my first one because I cheated like a bastard the day before. Soooo I decided to wait another month before I looked. To my surprise I'm down 14 1/2 inches. If I had looked sooner I might not have felt so much grrrr and stabby feels.

Wow you seem super busy. Is it possible to carry around a few healthy snacks with you to snack throughout the day? You could be also gaining weight because of the stress of your job in conjunction with not getting in healthy meals . Fasting is healthy. But it is a stressor, and combining that with a high stress environment you seem to be in could be a reason you are gaining weight. Maybe try focusing on keeping your stress low and getting in a big breakfast before you start your day job if you know you will be skipping lunch. Or bring a small backpack that can hold some healthy snacks like fruit, jerky, nuts, raw veggies etc

I usually do take measurements, at the beginning of every month, but I forgot for April. I'll make absolutely sure to do it for May. Nope. I can't be eating while in the kitchen at all, sanitary issues. And I'll be in the kitchen for the foreseeable future. My meals aren't usually too unhealthy, but we've been having a lot of take-out and eating out. because after 8-10 hours straight on my feet in a kitchen making food for other people, the last thing I want to do is stand in my own kitchen and make dinner. I've been trying to load up on vegetables at the very least, keep good protein in, and keep some healthy carbs in there, too.

Sounds like you get a lot of hidden cardio at your job, you're so very lucky! I think it's smart how you bring a reusable water bottle to work, you are a multitasker! Thinking about health and the planet, win win!

Ditto what Panigale1199 said. Your body could be in feast or famine mode. so if you go all day with barely eating, your body wants to hold on to what you eat (feast) in the evening, expecting famine.

If you mean "starvation mode", that's not a thing. It's a myth. Unless you're actually starving, like left on a deserted island for months kinda starving. Going a few days with a screwed up eating schedule isn't enough to make me "starve", it's just messing with my water weight, essentially.

I agree. Like I said- fasting is one thing and its fine to skip a meal here or there. But if you are truly hungry, then you should eat..or else why would your body send you hunger signals? Today I had breakfast at 10:00am and I am still not that hungry for lunch and its 2:30pm for me. I can probably go until 5:00pm before I eat again. It all depends. It could be the stress on your body, not enough calories compared to what you are burning, sleep. anything. I say take a look at if your sleeping a good 8 hours, minimize your stress if any, and make sure you are getting enough calories since you are burning so many during the day. See how that goes. Goodluck!!

Lol I don't think it's possible to work in food service and minimize stress levels.

I cannot eat at work. I don't have permission to leave my line, and I can't eat while in the kitchen for sanitary reasons. It's just not an option right now. That may change as we get schedules worked out and maybe get some more people in, but as of now, it's not possible for me to eat at work. The best I can do is a Cliff Bar in the morning (don't have time or the stomach for a "real" breakfast in the morning, never have), and I won't get dinner until sometime after 6pm when Husband gets home. And yeah, you can't work in food service and minimize stress. When our lunch rush lasts from around 11am to 4pm, every single weekday, and it's a literal non-stop, high speed, a dozen tickets or more backed up and up to 20 minute wait times because of HUGE orders (we're talking like 13 items on a single ticket, all with sides and special modifications), and we've barely been a restaurant for a week, there's no way to not be stressed out. But I know things will improve, I know things will even out and balance out and it will all get better.

8-10 hours with no breaks? That's a violation of labor laws.

I'm not being denied a break. Like, I'm not asking for one and they're telling me I can't take one. I'm just unable to take one because we're so slammed all the time, and there's no one to take over for me if I were to take a break. I can't leave my station unmanned.

I know theres a rush that can come from working in intense situations like that too. Energy breeds energy. It sounds like you're keeping hydrated which is great! Just be sure to get some quality nutrition in as best you can when you ARE able to eat. I know the temptation of "I just have to eat something fast and filling so I can fall over and crash."

Its good to know things will improve. Because being in an environment like that too too long is not healthy. My first job I worked 12 hour days every day and sometimes longer. I had a desk job. High stress. Barely any breaks. Emotional stress and it took a toll on my health as well. I couldn't sleep and I never saw my boyfriend or my puppy. I eventually said F it and left the job. My health and happiness was too important to let it keep suffering over that job. I hope your situation improves soon!!! Balance is always key. Btw I want to mention your eating situation kind of sounds like the warrior diet. It is a thing, or its call warrior fast. Look it up on Marksdailyapple.com. Since your situation eating wise is similar to that of the warrior diet I would do some research on how to thrive on it. I think it mentions about getting the most out of one huge dinner and fasting until dinner the next day. if your interested take a look
