JockoT's Journal, 12 March 2016

Just threw half a bag of Thorntons Moments in the bin. They have been shouting at me every time I went in the cupboard. I asked my other half to finish them but she said she was not fussy. So I made an executive decision.

Hi Jocko Good for you Buddy, best to get them out of sight and out of mind!.....Been thinking about that 16-8 Diet, so went on the Internet and found a great site that is for beginners wanting to do a low carb plus the 16-8 regime combined ( though mind you I love my ryvita's and bread, sorry to say ) whilst looking found this great recipe for making Oopsies Bread that you can have, so if and when I do change Diet at least I can have a bread substitute, found another interesting thing, you can only eat veggies that grow above ground level ( there are only a few below ground, root veg etc ) tons more in variety grow above so you can fill up on them, what a very informative site.....will read a lot more on the subject before making a decision on whether its the right one for me, I like to know the ins and outs of everything first..... According to the book I am reading (The Diet Delusion), subjects on 2700 Kcals a day, with no more than 80 Kcals of carbs lost 2 - 3 lbs / week!

Hi Jocko Is that a man's daily consumption as it seems rather high, I was wondering what a woman's would be? Did you purchase the book or was it from the Library? it might be an interesting read!

Gender, age, their current weight, height and TDEE during the study would all play a role; does the book go into detail about those aspects of the subjects? Not to challenge you directly, (so no rudeness intended, but these kinds of numbers without context can be very misleading for people). The reality is that number would cause MANY people to gain weight regardless of caloric makeup - me included. It would cause others to LOSE weight if they are the right combination of gender/weight/age/height/activity level. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for keeping carbs down, and lost a lot of weight doing so - to a point - then I had to start calculating, because however unfair it is, it's easy for me to still eat over what I burn if I don't. This doesn't apply to everyone - but the 2000 "average" recommended for women is dangerously misleading for many women - particularly if you're smaller, shorter, or older - or all 3 in my case.

The Diet Delusion, ISBN-10: 0091891418, is available from Amazon. I have the Kindle version, but your library will either have it, or be able to get it in for you. Regarding the subjects mentioned in the book, they were a variety of people, in a number of studies, over the past 80 years. The book doesn't say you can eat 2700 Kcals. It says that some of the subjects did and lost the weight. Basically the book looks at all the science, much of it bad, over the past 100+ years. The book is huge (over 500 pages) and I am only approaching the halfway mark!

I looked at a synopsis of the book online. Then I looked at criticisms of it. Basically I don't think I would have the scientific knowledge to understand whether he is right or not. But if it is helping you lose weight, and not doing you any harm, then that's a good thing.

I doesn't require scientific knowledge to understand (I know nothing about Biology and Physiology, I am an engineer), it but it is certainly not an easy read. But very interesting. My wife has got fed up with me telling her bits I come across!

Finished "The Diet Delusion" and started "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do about It", also by Gary Taubes. This was written in response to requests for something easier to read than Diet Delusions. It may be more what you are looking for, Heidi. ISBN-10: 0307474259

I remember just before my holiday you posted that you felt you were the only one not losing weight. I've come back now and you're 7lb lighter! Well done on your discipline and determination! :)

Thank you DolliBDC. It was a bit of a struggle at the beginning of the year.

Thanks, Jocko. I am a carb addict, though! I tried Atkins once, list some weight the first month, then no more, and didn't really get on with it anyway, so stopped after a while. As I've said elsewhere, my digestive system doesn't handle fats well. And I don't really enjoy eating animals, although I have been doing it the last 8 months. Calorie counting seems to work best for me, and the freedom to eat the things I do get on with and enjoy.
