So... adding pics, do I have to host the image elsewhere? Why am I such a n00b?

Usually I use Photobucket - then you copy the URL from them and paste it into your journal after clicking the Image icon - you paste the URl between "img - img" I suppose that is clear as mud...

If using Photobucket, as HCB says ... load your pic there after you get a free account. You can load a pic from another website, or your PC. In your journals you can post your pics. They are called BBC codes or Image codes. Photobucket gives you that code you need. You just copy and paste it in your journal. It will have brackets around it like this: [img]the url address[/img]
