Divided By Zero's Journal, 16 September 2009

I'm convinced that NBC is trying to kill someone on The Biggest Loser for a ratings hike. For the last two seasons, someone has been sent to the hospital (this time due to heat stroke) during the first workout. Their contestants just keep getting bigger, and if they continue the trend I think someone's going to kick the bucket on national TV.

As always, I will watch with complete fixation. I am... enthralled.

And now for a story about the male ego...

I went to a local park that has a 1 mile loop to run 3 miles yesterday afternoon. After finishing my second loop I saw a guy stretching near the parking lot. He looked at me, immediately dropped the stretching routine he was in the middle of, and took off so he could be about 20 yards in front of me.

The gauntlet was thrown DOWN!

Now, while I'm not fast, I am a distance runner, so I do have a good bit of endurance. I stepped it up a notch to match his speed and let my evil plan unfold. I kept the distance for the first half mile, but made my breathing louder so he knew I was still trailing him. Every time he would slow down he would look behind his shoulder to make sure I wasn't gaining too much ground. Then he would push himself to speed it back up so I wouldn't pass him. After the first half mile he was drained, so I picked up my pace enough to get right behind him, knowing he would pick it up again and eventually run himself into the ground. At the 3/4 mile I got right beside him on the path and matched his slowing speed. It only took a few steps before he just gave up and pulled off the path to walk and catch his breath.

Victory? Meh. I kind of feel like an a*****e. Next time I think I'll give someone a few words on encouragement when I see 'em struggle. Then again, that's easier to do when they aren't obviously trying to race you.

By the way, this only happens with guys. And it's not the first time that a guy has pulled in front of me to "race". Like I said, a story of the male ego.

Could've been worse. I could've beat my chest in triumph and yelled when I passed him. :P

BTW: It does not only happen with guys...I had a woman on the bike trail in your position (in back) attempt to chase me down. She would gain and I would move up notch. I did this to her for 6 miles at which point I turned around and asked her "do you want more?"

Interesting about the Biggest Loser, I was commenting about that to lgatzke the other day. You have given me an insight to the world of running that was amusing. :-)

Because I'm a slower runner I get passed all the time, and that doesn't bug me. It's only when a guy makes an effort to cut me off that I HAVE to run him into the ground if at all possible. I also notice that a lot of guys go apes*** when they're getting passed by a woman. I'll see guys on the trail double their speed to try to catch up to a faster woman, only to have to pull over to keep from puking as soon as they catch up. LOL

Ha ha, that is a great story! I think all males are wired to compete with one another :) Great job on kickin his arse.

You're so right about guys not enjoying being passed by a woman. I was on the track with my sister and this guy came up after we were already running for a good mile, and I kept up with him (on the opposite side of the track) and he kept watching me as I ran making sure I wasn't getting any closer. I eventually did, especially at the end when he saw me almost right behind me after I did my finishing sprint. I think I freaked him out. But it made me want to keep going. Nothing like a little friendly competition to keep you going! And I agree with you sfm about TBL trying to get someone killed for ratings purposes. But she shouldn't have tried showing off!! I'm sure she'll be fine.
